Dual Zone Climate..How does it work?

This question is based on the assumption that the small grill under the fan control is the temperate sensor, so if I'm wrong the question is invalid. However - how can the climate control regulate the temperate of the driver and passenger zones independantly with only one sensor? My manager's A6 has a sensor grill under each dial which makes more sense (although they're that close together I doubt it makes much difference). Does anyone know if there are sensors elsewhere, and if so, what does the sensor under the fan control do?

Not a major issue, but one that has had me thinking for a while (I should get out more ).

Jonsteele, you need to get out more.....for sure

I am guessing that it only needs one sensor and calculates the adjustments to flow / air temp to the driver side primarily. It's possible that the CC is smart enough to calculate what it needs to do to achieve the the temp set by the dial on the passenger side by taking into account the dial setting on the drivers side and the temp sensor data....if you follow. I would imagine having 2 sensors set 6 inches apart would get the same reading.

What bugs me more (I too need to get out more) is the fact that when alone in the car I feel compelled to turn both temp dials to the same setting........ it's bordering on compulsive obsession disorder.

I had a Saab previously and this could be set so that the drivers temp dial would also automatically adjust the passenger temp too if required. It had 2 settings, dual or, single zone climate control. I don't think the E90 can do this?

Don't beat yourself up about it - I too have to have both set the same (I hate it when the wife has hers different!).

me too and I also think its a stupid omission... the VAG and BENZ cars I have sat in all do both sides if you want them too, not sure why BMW didn't do that!

Gulp, you lot are weird, I have no problem with the wife having hers different, but I do set them the same when I am in the car on my own.

perhaps we should send a copy of this thread to BMW R&D - proof that they need to revise the design .

Would it just be an update to the software?

On the new E Class I had you couldn't set it to do both sides together, you can in my our Alfa 147 though.

When I'm on my own in the car I too always change them together to make sure they are the same!

the benz have the 2 versions of the climate control.. one has the knobs for the temp control, whilst the more expensive system has the digital stuff and that adjusted both from what i remember..

the VAG cars, you just push the temp and hold and it matches the passenger side to drivers side.

Are we nutters or are the designers of the separate controllers nutters?

And I thought I was the only one to get all OCD on the temp dials, drives the gf nuts.

The Alfa 147 has a button marked "mono" that locks the setting together. Clearly designed by a bloke.

I had a 1 hour drive home tonight and tested my resolve by setting the passenger control to 17.5 degC as opposed 18 on the drivers side. It was painfull but I was able to avoid temptation.

Seeing as everyone is confessing to this .......I'll own up as well. OCD is alive and kicking on here then But it is SO annoying if the temperature reading is NOT the same on both sides. Shit how sad.
