M240i or M4 Convertible.....from a 13' M6 Convertible

I own my M6 outright, I like it but is is bigger and heavier than i like...

I have been advised that for tax reasons having my company lease a new car gives me best tax bang for the buck so I am looking to possibly replace the M6 with either a new 240i or M4 convertible. M4 would cost at least $400 month more. I like the size and weight of the 2 series, I like the interior of the 4 series far better.

Thoughts.

2 simply bc soft top vs hard. Useable trunk better center of gravity and handling. Interior marginally better in 4 but it's not that much better that I'd get it over the 2.

OP;
Need more info:
Is there a cap on your company's tax benefit subsidy of your vehicle?
Do they also subsidize your fuel purchases?
You only mention size/weight vs interior as evaluation criteria. Did you test drive both to evaluate performance/handling or was that not important in your evaluation?

With that being said, I think the 2 series in general is a better daily driver because of the size, and in my opinion the perfect amount of usable power. However, if the 2 series interior really bothers you, go for the M4. You spend every second inside the car...its pretty important! Also keep in mind you are coming from one of the biggest cars in the BMW lineup, jumping to a 240 will be a big change in terms of size, handling, power, and comfort.

In the end, go test drive them both! You can't really go wrong! Good luck with the hunt for a new ride!

To answer questions, its a one owner "s" corp.
Is there a cap on your company's tax benefit subsidy of your vehicle? No
Do they also subsidize your fuel purchases? Yes, paid with company credit card

Did you test drive both to evaluate performance/handling or was that not important in your evaluation?

I owned a E93 M3, went to a 235i coupe, missed the convertible so went back to M3 E93, then to my M6. I find the M6 to be too big (no kids, drive alone 90% of the time). I will need to test drive the M4 still to no for sure, but except for the lack of a convertible, I did like my M235i

That would make the M4 Cabrio almost a no-brainer for me. The only thing that would give me pause is the folding hard-top which gives you little to no trunk space. With top down on my 235i ragtop, I can still fit in 2 sets of golf clubs.

It really depends on what you intend to use it for. Since you are driving alone 90% of the time, the smaller car may not be a bad option. The M4 definitely takes the crown in the performance factor but that doesn't mean the M240i isn't a performer as well. There are tons of other factors that play into it - it's ll going to come down to what you would like to get out of it.

You need to read the whole thread. He had an M235i Coupe and traded for and E92 M3 vert because he missed the convertible.

Between the M240i and the M4, it really comes down to which is most important, trunk space (M240i wins) or interior (M4 in full leather wins). Of course power and ride quality are also significantly different. While I'd love an M4 convertible, even if cost weren't a factor, and it would be a significant factor for me, the folding hard top is a non-starter as far as I am concerned. I absolutely need a functional trunk with the top down, which is why I absolutely love my M235i vert.

If cost weren't a factor I'd have taken the M4 over my m240i, in fact I went in to buy a '16 M4 when on a whim I test drove the 2-er and felt it was close enough performance wise for significantly less money. Adding a JB4 more than closed the performance gap so I have no regrets there

But an M is still an M, and the 4 imo is the best looking car in BMW's lineup

Trunk space is not an issue for me (I also own a 2010 Cayenne and my 1990 E30 has a surprisingly large trunk as well.). In fact I have had a subwoofer stuffed in all my cars. If I need to haul anything I always have the back seat.

The metal roof is a drawback as it adds weight.

I think I need to really drive them side by side.

This question came up in another thread so I will provide the same answer. I love my 235 but damn, if I had the choice, I'd go M4 all day. I don't see how the 2er could be a better daily since the M has more adjustability than the 2er. I had no idea the 2er trunk is bigger though, if that's critical for you. I don't know, to me an M4 is leagues better in almost every way. Also, another thing to consider is the weight of the two with the vert option. I think the 2 is 3-400 lbs heavier. Personally, I went with no sunroof and manual seats to save weight as I can imagine a 4000lb 2er might not be as much fun. Good luck!

Id say drive them back to back. This is a tough call.

The M4, even in vert form is a beast of a car, barely dropping in performance to its coupe counterpart.

If price is not that big of a concern, and neither is trunk space, personally, I would go for the M4. Nicer interior, nicer sound system (much nicer). The car is just overall more raw.

The M235/M240 are really nice cars, but I think the M4 is just a meaner machine through and through. You already owned an e93 M3 vert, so I would say the harsher ride of the M might not be that much of a hinderance to you.

It is a really close call honestly, my suggestion, (as I am sure others have mentioned) drive them back to back.

"the harsher ride of the M might not be that much of a hindrance to you" Never even noticed it in the M3

M4 vert weight is 4,055 9.5 lbs per hp
M240i vert weight is 3,790 11.3 lbs per hp

440i is out because its expensive (and if I am going to spend I will get an M4), its too common around here, and i know that I will regret not getting the M4 if I went that route.

Since money is no object I would go m4. Interior is nicer. A little more space

What you should really do if you can is test drive an M240 with Dinan Stage 1. I believe for that car it's like $1500 installed. My dealer, Thompson, always has a few on the lot for sale that have Dinan already installed since they are a Dinan shop for instance.

But yes drive things back to back as much as possible and make a call. Neither option is bad just depends what you want.

M240i
+The 2 feels more playful (especially around corners)
+soft top doesn't weigh too much and you actually have trunk space with the top down
-soft top problems (noise, temperature, prone to slashing)
-interior materials are kind of shitty especially coming from a m6

m4
+faster and a bit more serious
+hardtop feels more like a regular coupe when closed and it doesn't feels like there's just a tarp over your head
+interior is much nicer
-huge trunk space reduction when the top is down
-the hardtop weighs around 500lbs
-less playful
