What do people's steering wheels look like?
Car's done just under 21K now and I look after it very carefully, including the interior but still, the steering wheel is going shiny. It still feels nice and reasonably matte when it's clean (just cleaned and protected it) but what else can I do to stop it going shiny?

Our 335d wheel is very different now compared to the much newer 330e one, but I actually found myself preferring the 335d one! It's grippier and has a bit more character now, albeit less soft. Really not sure there is much you can do about though.
Perhaps try G Techniq leatherguard?

I use leather cream every few weeks which makes it matt and smell like new leather.

I clean mine every 3 months with leather cleaner and a soft shoe brush using a damp micro fibre cloth to remove the residue and then a wipe down with a dry cloth.
Never suffered from a shiny steering wheel using that method, do the same on the seats as well. I'm not a believer in using creams on painted leather as it tends to sit on the top and only really old dried out aniline leather needs that treatment. I do over 30k per year as well and sometimes seem to live in the car so it's not light usage that keeps the wheel and seats matt.

Cleaned mine constantly from new but at 23k i can almost see my face in it now. I get eczema on my hands so have to use a lot of creams etc which is annoying. I also work on building site quite often so it does get dirty.
I've been considering getting a leather brush and some more expensive leather cleaner to see if I can improve it. Was looking at chemical guys cleaner. May also get the Gtechniq sealant as well. |

Creams and potions on your hands will clearly add to the issue, I get cracked hands in really cold weather and have to use creams but tend to wear gloves when it's really cold.

Using creams in your hands will make them very shiny indeed
It's why I had to stop masturbating and driving.

The shiny leather steering wheel is a result of oils transferring from your hands to the wheel and filling in the little pits in the leather. If you want to prevent it, use driving gloves.

I bought Carplan leather connoisseur kit from halfords in a hurry. Next time I'll invest in something better although this is not bad.

Certainly makes my oyster seats easier to clean. An absolute cinch really.

I'm not saying I approve of driving gloves unless you are driving a rare vintage car but it IS the best solution. Please try to argue it's not, it will be amusing.

So would wearing a full forensic suit to prevent dirtying your seats and wearing surgical blue plastic overboots to save transferring dirt on to the mats....as well as a respirator so you dont spray mucus all over the cabin. But to save looking like a bell-thronk, I tend to just compromise and have a fairly regular cleaning regime. A packet of those car wipe thinigies in the side pocket and if stuck at traffic lights or waiting at the shops, I'll just give the wheel a bit of a wipe over. Onlookers sometimes look at me a bit weirdly. Looks like I'm trying to wipe my prints of a stolen car |
