Brand new m240i, scratches already?
I've literally just driven from the dealers to home and I've noticed some small scratches on the car already! How soft is the paint on these cars? MG paint if that makes a difference.
I'm wondering if some unskilled idiot at the dealers did a wash on it yesterday, i picked up the car in the dark so I didn't notice them until the morning, but either way its upsetting to see how fragile this paint on a 50k car is. |

Take it back and have it fixed. Yes, some of the detail guys at my BMW dealer are gorillas. Also, never have them wash the car after a service, you'll just end up with more scratches.

I dont think its a problem with the paint, it has more to do with the dealer wash bays like the poster above mentioned. I had an amazing obsidian black Lexus that was ruined by swirls and surface scratches when I would bring it in. I specifically ask for no wash when I go for service nowadays. Find a good detailer or stick with touchless washes and DIY's imo.

I have experienced the same issue.
Now I will never collect a new car, or a car back from service etc when it is dark or raining. I always insist on a walk around the vehicle when dropping off for service and have the dealer note the condition. Then inspect thoroughly when collecting. Most of the door dings, scuffs and scratches over the years happened at the dealerships. |

Maybe it's just adhesive or something that'll buff out with pure polish and wax. |

I have a hang tag I put on my mirror that says DO NOT WASH. Telling the service rep doesn't always guarantee it won't get washed. I have a detailing business. Try some polish, you can buy Meguiar's at any auto store and get some good microfiber towels. Squeeze some on your towel and apply it to the scratches. Work the polish into the scratches gently with mild pressure. Remove with a clean towel. You may have to repeat the process. Do not use compound on it. If the polish doesn't remove the scratches tell the dealer you want to take it to a detailing shop and do not let them touch it. They should pay for it.

The dealership is going to fix it this weekend, there were also greasy fingerprints all over the inside of the car so it looks like a rag monkey was let loose on it.
I hope they don't let that guy touch the M5 that was waiting for pickup. The experience with the dealer was great up until then, the sales and finance guys were top notch and I'd recommend them very highly for the amazing deal they got me and super fast delivery. Sadly their 'genius' also was anything but, for some reason the guy pulled on both the rear seat release levers while he was showing me them - on the drive home I braked and both rear seats flew forward hitting the front seats HARD. Since I was literally in a horrible car crash just the day before (which totaled my wife's car) I almost leapt out the seat thinking I'd been hit again when I felt the impact and heard the bang! |

I'm discouraged to hear this. I had a similar experience with my BMW dealer some months back; scratch in the door; oil spots on the engine covers; water in the door jambs, etc. My car really was cleaner before I brought it in for the factory scheduled service. I won't let them wash it next time. Their wash team looked like a bunch of high school kids.
In addition, the tone inside their building was like a zoo. Noisy, loud talk from the employees, slow service at the parts counter. All in all, very disappointing, particularly for a BMW dealer/servicer.

Never, never, never, never (you get the point) let the dealer prep a new car or wash it for service. I buy my cars with all of the factory plastic still on and prep it myself.

All of the above comments above are valid. When I take my 1-series in for service, I ask for "no wash," and I tape a note to the steering wheel. The one time I forgot, I had to polish out swirls later.
Also, I do think that all automotive paint is softer nowadays. Easier to get swirls, easier to pick up stone chips. I blame the water-based automotive paints mandated today. Just like the porch floor and garage floor paint today is so inferior, thanks to the VOC regs. I had fewer issues with this stuff twenty years or so ago. |

I'm always pesty about telling everybody not to wash it - so far so good. But it is usually so filthy that I can't imagine what they think of me turning it down (I feel like the guy at the soup kitchen who is saying 'no thanks, I'm a vegetarian').

The bright side is that dealer and car wash detail shops are good for my business. I could write a book on the condition of vehicles I detail after the "detailers" at these places screw them up.

Not going to beat a dead horse, but people who let the dealer wash their car are just asking for scratches.
The above posts are correct "no wash" every time you visit the dealer. |

Just got my car back from some minor body work and the paint is full of swirl marks now. Car has less than 5k miles, I'm so fucking pissed. If I had known they were gonna wash it I would have told them not to.

Take it back asap. Make them pay for a pro detail or threaten to call BBB or other agencies that deal with poor work.

Just to add my own story, I had my dealer install the carbon fibre spoiler on my car before I took delivery in November. What a mistake that was.
They must have pulled the original spoiler off with zero care or attention, and now there are massive scrape marks all along the top of the trunk. To make matters worse, when they attached the carbon fibre spoiler, they used an additional adhesive instead of just the 3M tape, so it can't even be taken off now to correct the paint, and a buffer can't reach the scratches with the spoiler in the way. This has been a maddening 2 months and the experience has really soured me. |

Rayscott is correct. Dealerships are a professional detailer's best friend. Not that I am a pro by any means, but I "fixed" a brand-new Cayman for a friend, after the dealership monkeys butchered it.
The owner was so happy, he let me have the car the following weekend. |

This happened to me and I made the shop send it to a detailer of my choice for a paint correction. Cost the shop $500. They paid because I specifically insisted no wash even with paintwork being done. Went to pick my car up and it was swirl city (not my M235i but my last F30). I refused delivery and left it there until the sent it out.

Well the shop manager made the decision to let the outside company that details cars for them wash it. I asked to look the car over inside when picking it up and sure enough the car looked like a record player.
