DIY request

Can someone please post a DIY of replacing auto shift selector. I have read that it is just pulling up but does it need to be put into drive or neutral? And what is required to put a new one in? Do you need to just line up the plastic poles? I realize this is probably an easy process. But before I buy a new knob I want to make sure I am not getting myself into something where I will need to tear my dash apart. Thanks for anyones help.
