Find TDC on a 335i??

How do you find TDC with no locking pin in flywheel? can you can't look at the cams because cams are off.

Do you put a long screw driver in cylinder # 1

And when the screw driver reaches The top of the block and IN the dead zone that moment is TDC?

The screwdriver trick will work, but I always feel more comfortable using a wooden dowel or something since it will be on top of the piston. Probably not a big deal but I don't want to stick a screwdriver in my combustion chamber.
