The Hip
I just realized that I don't think I've seen a Tragically Hip thread on here, a bit surprising all in all.
With the last concert coming up this weekend, thought I'd share my best Hip memory (and this will definitely date me). It was New Year's Eve 1988 and they were playing at Canada Place in Vancouver. It was just before Up to Here was released so they were pretty much unknown at the time but they played all that stuff from Up to Here (Blow at High Dough, Speedway, Boots or Hears, New Orleans is Sinking) as well as older stuff. They were actually the opening act for The Northern Pikes but once they got on stage they just electrified the place. None of knew much about them but it was one of those moments where you know you were seeing something really special. The coolest part of the show? It was New Year's Eve ... all the guys were in suits, all the girls in evening gowns and cocktail dresses ... and there was fricking mosh pit. It's the only time I've been in a mosh pit where everyone was wearing dress clothes. I have seen them a couple of time since ... great shows, but that night was the coolest. I think it would be a really nice touch for the CFL to invite them to play the Grey Cup halftime this year (obviously subject to Gord Downie's health). |

Yeah, went to the Friday show at ACC. it was great to see them again. First show was in Ottawa at Barrymore's circa 1982 or 83.
Northern Pikes....holy moly. Forgot about them. Probably playing CasinoRama now...
