Photos: How are the M mirrors fitted on the BMW 2002 Concept

Don't shoot me for discussing this topic of mirrors again, but on the 2002 Concept revealed at Villa d'este this weekend you might have spotted BMW M3/M4 mirrors. Those were fitted on a concept car which has a BMW M2 base.

I leave the discussion to you, in case some of you want to discuss the story what if or not... The photos tell the story, and might reveal if it can be done or not...

The connecting arm is different. That probably has a lot to do with it.

Yup but the triangular part connecting the arm to the door looks quite the same. I did not measure it

It looks quite the same because they modified it to fit the 2er.

2002 Hommage side mirrors design. Hm, not so long ago BMW pulled the "superior aerodynamics" card re the M235i/M2 mirrors.

Excerpt from a BMWBlog interview with M2 designer Al-Attar, tackling the M mirrors versus M235i mirrors topic too:
«We asked Al-Attar about some of the more controversial styling cues of the M2, as well, like the controversial issue with the lack of M mirrors. The M2 mirrors are pulled straight from the M235i while fans wanted the same mirrors from its bigger M brothers.
Al-Attar says that the team noticed during aerodynamics testing that the M mirrors actually fared worse than the M235i’s on the M2. This is likely due to the higher body of the M2 over the M3 or M4. So the M235i mirrors stayed because they offered superior aerodynamics.
The other reason for the lack of M mirrors is the need to differentiate between the M2 and the M4. “What we tried to do with the car is to keep a respectable distance from the M4; the car is very sporty, very fun to drive, but we wanted to keep the distance in positioning the car in the market,” Al-Attar mentioned.»

I am gonna take a measuring tool when I find some time in my agenda this year and check both the M4 and M2, and investigate it. Just for the fun of it...

The M4 base doesn't even look close to that.

So they made a mold for one piece on this concept alone or they used a test one they made for the M2, which in the end did not make it into production.
