Starter replacement DIY

Hello guys and gals,

My starter is shot, do you have to remove the intake manifold to do this job?

Thanks in advance!

I just recently did this on my car, i would say be very careful with the breather valve hoses, and no need to completely remove the intake you can move it to the side and use an 11mm box wrench on the back bolt and an extension with the e torx bit on the other bolt. Goodluck

I did! However, my mechanic where I take things when it's more demanding said he removes some screws/nuts on the intake and a angle it to get access and do the job in 30min without removing it. Wish I knew that when I did it... Especially since I had to do it twice due to a bad new one, before I got a Turner one which as expected was perfect, and Ian overnighted it since I was in a pinch - thanks again!

Thanks for the tips fellas! I'll definitely follow your advice and not completely remove the IM if I don't have to!

FYI, I replaced the starter this week end in a couple of hours. I didn't have to completely remove the IM along with all the hoses and wires attached beneath it. I just pulled it up and moved it to the side with all the stuff still attached to it and was able to easily access the starter. Not a bad job at all really...

Nice job! I am not even going to tell you what it took me.... But I did pick up a bad/new starter first and had to do the work twice. And my oil filter housing gasket was shot which was quick/easy with intake off so at least that was a plus for me. Just trying to justify the time I spent as you can tell.

I posted up a DIY on this some time ago. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1058915

I still don't understand people who do the job with the manifold on. Wish someone would DIY that process.

As I understand key is to remove some of the studs/bolts and then you can rotate it. However, like you, I took it off and saw no other way at that time but it does make sense thinking back.

Only way to rotate it is to remove all but one bolt. At that point, it seems best just to remove it. Then you can inspect all the valves.
