50k Mile Maintenance
What do all of you recommend that I do in terms of maintenance at the 50k mile mark? VANOS solenoids? Spark plugs? Any and all suggestions are appreciated. Oil was done 1,000 miles ago as well as air filters. Thanks.

Change the engine air filter. Maybe clean and swap the VANOS solenoids.

If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

Oh I forgot to mention that I did replaced the engine and cabin air filters 1k miles ago as well as changed the oil. I'm considering the VANOS solenoids but need to do my research on them. Anything in particular that I need to know? I'm riding that they usually don't need to be replaced as much as the seals around the do... Regardless, I'll do anything that is necessary.

If you have a 335i, I'd suggest the following-
Oil pan Oil filter housing and gasket Oil change Vanos solenoids Walnut shell blasting If you're running a tune- Injectors Spark plugs Turbos/waste gates (extended warranty to 82k mi) |

OP, maybe change your spark plugs, but it sounds like you're already in good shape. Water pump/thermostat are gonna fail eventually but you probably don't need to worry right now. I would honestly just drive your car and enjoy it |

Keep up with your oil and filter changes and other regular maintenance items. Intake filter could use replacing if it hasn't.
I did tranny and diff fluids at 50k (and 100k) since it's relatively cheap to do and I don't trust BMW's "lifetime fluid" claim. I did spark plugs and serpentine belt/tensioner/pulley at ~100k. All other stuff is replace/fix as needed when broken or acting up IMO.

You are correct, I checked the service booklet on line for the 2010 328xi, it is indeed 60,000 miles. They also took the notification out of the CBS as well. Interesting...

Don't change anything unless it's broke. Replace all filters and do the plugs. I'd recommend trans fluid if it was a car operates in the city or for short trips.
Otherwise, should be solid. |

2) flush/ change the power steering fluid 3) spark plugs 4) check brake pads 5) check belts 6) check coolant 7) run techtron 20 gallon formula (you should do this every 6 months to be honest) 8) 4-wheel alignment 9) New air filter or re-charge your oiled filter 10) walnut blasting every 35k 11) Differential fluid - flush? (if you are a spirited driver or you track the car) 12) Change cabin air filter? (should be changed every 36k) 13) START LOOKING FOR DEALS ON A WATER PUMP AND THERMASTAT. IF YOU FIND A DEAL OF 20% OFF OR MORE, PULL THE TRIGGER. Better that it sits on your shelf than the vendor's, if the price is right. From 75k and beyond, your on borrowed time, especially after 100k this is very true. Also, bookmark DIY's on how to change it, and procure the various tools you don't have, in order to make it easier. Last edited by mweisdorfer; 05-29-2016 at 08:55 AM.. |

Vanos solenoid cleaning will take you 20 minutes max. I did it for the first time on Friday. Take out the bolt, pull them out, and blast with brake cleaner. Shake dry. Coat with a bit of oil and then stick them back in. Would not hurt to replace the seals but not necessary (mine are fine at 111K miles). By the way, my solenoids were clean -- they were spotless as soon as I washed off the oil.
It would not hurt to do the plugs My dealer replaced mine at 50K miles and I did them again (myself) at 111K (they were toast). I think they fall out of spec (the gap) long before 50K miles. If you have never done this before, will take about an hour. Suggest watching a youtube video or two before you attempt this. I would also recommend transmission fluid change. I do my MT every 30K. If I had an auto, I would probably do it every 50K. While you are at it, perhaps the diff fluid as well? Have never done mine before but am thinking about it. |
