Brake pad change at dealer/ indy shop - insane price?
i have an 07 335i with 84k miles and its due for some new pads (they've been changed before lol) I called an indy shop and the stealership and they both quoted me roughly $1500 since they would do the rotors as well, is this price high? It seems a bit insane to me!

look up a diy and diy it, aint that hard, you shouldn't pay more than 300 or so for pads all around. but yea that indy shop is pretty ridiculous. Re word this question in your regional forum page so someone can point you to a local indy that will help you out or at least use lube

Find a new shop....Buy your parts online and call around for quotes. I used to live in the area, plenty of good shops who will not rip you off.

Did this at an indy a few years back for around $950 with all OEM parts. But you being in the SF area, you can easily expect a 20% bump. So I guess $1500 is not too outrageous in your area. Try DIY if you have the time, tools, and space.

Brakes are easy, if you have a jack, jack stands, basic tools, and PB Blaster, you should be able to DIY, just check out a video before you do it. |

If that's for all 4, from what I've heard, that is the price...if you DIY with OEM, it will come out to the $600's.....the only OEM I don't use is I save a few $ by using PEX sensors.
Just DIY, you can even get away without doing the rotors if your rotors are good. My wife's uncle who works in Munich said you guys don't stop 130-0, over and over like we do, that's where the practice of always replacing rotors comes from. My fear at dealerships and indys, is I was always told there is a "value line" rotor/pad. How do you know they didn't put that in and charge you $1500 for what came with the car? |

Do the job yourself. Brakes are just about the easiest thing next to an oil change. And if you don't wanna be bothered with the brake pad sensor you can bypass it. I took mine apart, cut the wires and spliced them together. I myself, along with everyone else on this forum, is more than capable of checking their brake pads every so often. For $1500 they better be supplying some nice aftermarket rotors and pads, or at least painting your calipers

Before owning a BMW, I found the sensors to be very "mysterious." Isn't it that if you've tripped it, you can't reset your CBS or something, forget. But I didn't do OEM, I did PEX, which are like $14, $15, plus with FCP's lifetime warranty I expect my next set to be free....the back you have to kinda undo the liner, not a big deal, the front has a little plastic box you open up.... edit: p.s. BMW has a special tool to check brake pad wear without removing rims....it probably costs $5000 for something that looks like a tire depth gauge, but the tool exists... |

Parts are $600. Takes about an hour per axle to do it on your own

I get it though if you've never done it, it's like anything else, it's nice to see it done. But that's what youtube is for....nowadays... I can't f***** believe how expensive the rattle clips and slider pins are. On normal cars you can just replace them for the heck of it. Not on a BMW....the fronts (rattle clips) are ugly, rusted...but @ $25 I'll keep the old ones... |

I was quoted $1200 at a Firestone in NY. I bought front and rear brake kits from FCP Euro $555. Kits included Zimmermann rotors, Akebono pads, PEX wear sensors and clips, grease, and hand cleaner. I referenced FCP's viedo for the brake job. I used my friends lift at his dad's gas station. I don't know how you could reach and loosen some of those bolts while just on jack stands. Their customer service is top notch and have a lifetime warranty even on wear parts ie brake pads, rotors, windshield wipers etc. It sounds nuts but I even asked them when my rotors and pads are worn they will replace them, they said yes.

You might steer someone wrong with that, because you're implying you need a lift, which you do not. If you can't use a 3/8 ratchet to loosen the respective bolts, they are overtightened....

I would just order Textar pads off Amazon -- evidently they are similar to OEM in bite and dust. My car didn't need front or rear rotors at 60k, will change the front when the pads are done. Easy DIY once the wheels are off and if you have the right sockets etc. Would also recommend flushing brake fluid as well, much cheaper to do maintenance all at once.
