Free Rental while waiting for airbag recall parts?
I have a friend who is a SA at my local dealer which has BMW and Honda franchises. I asked him if he could get an inside scoop on when I might be able to get the driver airbag done on my E92. He said it was looking like late summer, and asked me if I would take the rental in the meantime. I asked him what the heck he was talking about.
It turns out, Honda is offering their customers free rentals while they wait for their Takata airbag recall parts. http://owners.honda.com/Documentum/R...se_0000152.pdf "A Message to Our Customers 5/22/15 ... If your vehicle is affected by this recall, we encourage you to take immediate action to have it repaired. There is no cost for the repair. Should there be any wait for a replacement airbag inflator, our dealers are prepared to provide alternative transportation in the form of a loaner or rental vehicle, free of charge, until your own vehicle is repaired." Did I miss a similar memo from BMW?

[My friend works on the Honda side. He wrote back to me "I tried to look you up in our system, but when I put "Douche" in the computer, hundreds of BMW and Mercedes owners came up." ]

+1 There has never been a death resulting from a faulty airbag in a BMW.

I feel 100x safer in my BMW, that I would in some bottom of the range rental car from Hertz or Enterprise etc. Mmmmm Chevy HHR - joyous!
I submit myself much, much to more danger everyday walking to and from my car than I do from the airbag which may or may not* be dangerous in the event of a crash**. *not, the answer is not. **crashes are dangerous mmmkay, don't do that. |

Honda sells a lot more cars than BMW so they are more likely to have had issues, but 9 to 0 does not bode well for only a 4x sales gap... I don't feel so unsafe as to be demanding a rental myself, just more reason to be driving my 850 (as soon as it warms up)

Bmw isn't offering this service as there has not been a case of a Takata air bag rupture in a Bmw.
That's what I was told.

Overall, the risk is probably very low, but just because it hasnt happened yet doesnt mean it wont in the future. |

Buddy of mine at work has two Hondas and an E46 cabrio. All three are hit by the Takata airbag bug. BMW had his car for 3 months over the summer of 2015. They finally put a "fresh" Takata airbag in it and said come back when we have a new unit to replace it with. Then recently both his Hondas got the bug. He's now driving two Honda rentals....
8 years and two different continents are his cars built.

A manual transmission can be set to "comfort", "sport", and "track" modes simply by the technique and speed at which you shift it; it doesn't need "modes", modes are for manumatics that try to behave like a real 3-pedal manual transmission. If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."
