First flat tire, slime was useless

Luckily, it happened about a minute from my house so I just drove slowly into my garage. Couldn't find the hole so I busted out the slime kit and then started pumping in air. I then hear air escaping and see this long tear close to the rim:

I put in a good 16 oz of slime and drove back and forth a bit but it wouldn't seal. I hope tirerack honors their road hazard protection. I'm also gonna need a jack to get the wheel off, can I just use any scissorjack from autozone and use a block of wood? I noticed the jacking point is a plastic rectangle with the mounting point inside.

It's not totally useless, it makes a mess inside of your tire and makes the person installing a replacement really angry

side wall tears or punctures are not to be sealed or repaired. You have to change your tyre.

slime is only good when the puncture is on the tread area. there's no centrifugal force on the sidewalls to keep the slime adhered during rotation.

How do you get a tear like that? Only way I could think of is to hit a curb HARD to where it crushes it. And that dip in the sidewall line hints at that.

What they said. Slime or any tire repair kit can only fix small holes from nails and screws in the tread area. Any long gouges or tears in the sidewall or tread area won't seal.

Slime and similar products are flung away from the sidewalls and onto the tread area by air pressure and rotational force - it's how they work.

This can happen with run-flats also, I had a sidewall blow on a run-flat the crippled the tire in under 10 miles. I always have AAA or some towing coverage at all times, make it someone else problem to come save you

There was a huge pothole I didn't see. Still there must have been something sharp in there to cause this tear. I was lucky it happened so close to home. I pretty much rode on my rim haha. I didn't realize the tear until I put the slime in already. Oh well, I filed a claim with Tirerack, hope it goes through.

Check your rims for cracks, it might even be bent because that must have been a nasty hit.

Yup, quite likely.
Ask me how I know.

got my PSI light on pulled over and put in slime, came out the end where there was a small puncture, drove 1 mile and the car would not hold. The product is garbage, the mechanic was very upset he had to clean it and said it makes patching harder because its slippary and that hed have to clean it off(Big deal)
