Nice tip, thanks...

Now another question: can we replace those cheap wipers with higher quality ones? Which ones would fit?

The thing is, wipers are included in the maintenance program, and my dealer changes them every time I go in. If buy expensive ones, they will just get thrown out.

Tilt windshield wiper arm

Most cars, it seems like you can tilt the windshield wiper arm up, about 90*, to clean the windshield, replace the wiper blade, whatever. I was decontaminating/claying my car, and I realized our cars don't do this. With the hood down, the arm hits it; with the hood up, the arm hits it. Is this just a BMW design for the F-chassis? Or am I missing something? It only took me a year to realize this

There's a procedure to raise the wipers to a serviceable position.

Click here to view a video demonstration in case the embedded video below doesn't work.

Yeah, I noticed this too. I wonder if it is just a "feature" of the F8x or if this is common to F3x's as well. Maybe there is a "maintenance" position we can activate by rubbing our stomach and patting our head somehow.

edit, apparently there is.

It's in the manual:

Fold-out position of the wipers
Fold wipers back when you want to change the blades or with pending low temperatures.
1. Switch the ignition on and off again.
2. With icy conditions make sure that blades are not frozen to the windshield.
3. Press the wiper lever up beyond the point of resistance and hold it for approx. 3 seconds, until the wiper remains in a nearly vertical position. After the wipers are folded back down, the wiper system must be reactivated.

Folding wipers back down
Before switching the ignition on, fold the wipers back down to the windshield; otherwise, the wipers may become damaged when they are activated.
1. Switch on the ignition.
2. Push wiper lever down. Wipers move to their resting position and are ready again for operation.

I opened the PDF of the Owner's Manual and searched for "wipers".

To be fair about the changing wiper blades has been done the same way for eons. Leave it to BMW to make it more technical.

This seems like something that didn't need to be this complicated, a wiper blade change mode? C'mon BMW.

And people rode horses and carriages for centuries. The old argument "but it's always been done this way" has never held and helps smother progress and innovation. Would you still want to send someone a letter when you wanted to communicate with them?

And the windshield wiper was invented and patented by Mary Anderson in 1903. So, a little over a century ago, not really eons.

Windshield wipers are parked under the cowl/hood for two reasons:
  • To reduce wind noise = quieter cabin
  • For less wind resistance and smoother airflow = minute improvement to gas mileage

BMW is not the first manufacturer to do this nor did they invent this method. I used to have a 2009 VW Jetta TDI as my company car and it had a "service position" for the wipers. It drove me crazy when I tried to replace the wiper blades until I RTFM. My boss at the time bought it new and drove it for a couple of years before it got passed down to me and he didn't even know this. The F3x cars are also designed this way and they were released in 2012, four years ago.

Make more sense now?

Wow, I was trying to be funny/tongue in cheek and you seem to have taken my comments literally. I realize why they made the change and agree with it. My comment was mainly that it is a little counter-intuitive without having read the full text of the manual.

But I ended my comment with a !

I completely agree having gone through that frustration myself. But like I said, I just opened the Owner's Manual PDF and searched for "wipers". Took like, 15 seconds. And it turned out, someone started a thread like this 1.5 years ago (which we got merged into)!
