Mixing tyres?

My M5 came with Pirellis

To be fair I haven't really noticed any issues with them, but the rears are down to around 3mm now after 13k miles so are due for change.

I'm having MPSS's rears fitted this weekend and plan to leave the Pirellis on the front as they still have 6mm left

Has anyone else done similar on their car? Was considering changing the fronts too and selling the Pirellis on ebay.

What to do?

I dont think it will cause an issue at all. But the MPSS are the way forward for future.

The problem with mixed tyres

The problem with mixing tyres is that you only find out IF there are problems when the tyres are under extreme load like emergency braking, swerving, unexpected damp patches etc.....the very time you want your tyres to perform at 110%.

I've driven quite a few M cars and over the years have found that for example having half worn tyres on 1 axle and new tyres on the other will compromise the handling to some degree, so I personally wouldn't mix tyres, but then I'm anal and keep my cars 100% properly maintained

I've had the rear MPSS on for a few weeks now, and the grip from the rear is considerably better than I remember the Pirellis being when new.

New MPSS for the fronts are going on this weekend!
