I would go with A8 if you have the funds, and BMS stage 1 if you prefer a cheaper alternative.
ER catted downpipe is what you should be looking at. Lots and lots of exhausts out there. Too much to list. Are you looking to stick with the single sided dual tip exhaust? Double sided single tip exhaust? Quad tip exhaust? |

I'm still on the fence with what tune to go with myself. Every time I convince myself to get the Dinan stage 1, I just can't pull the trigger on something that expensive just to give myself peace of mind (mine is a lease too, already 1/3 of the way into it). It sounds great on paper and there are plenty of good reviews, but a bit pricey for something I won't keep.
I'm basically all set to go with the Active-8, plus or minus their axle back exhaust. It seems to toe the line really well between build quality, reliability, and value. BMS is dead simple though. Also super cheap, and from what I've read, excellent customer service. Still, if it were me, I'd go with AA.

since you live in socal
from what you have listed,
1) i'd do A8, stock DP, followed by a Dinan, AA, or M-Performance axleback. 2) if you must have the catted DP, then i'd do JB4, ER or Wagner catted DP, and the same axlebacks listed in 1. |

non-catted will definitely have a CEL. even with the catted DP there is still a possibility to generate a CEL. that's why i recommend don't change the cat. it is also requires some effort to install and remove.
if there is a problem with your car in the future and there is a possibility of it being related to your modifications then you'd have problems. so i'd remove the A8 and DP before bringing your car in for service. you want to have modifications that are easy to revert back to stock prior to taking your car in for service. then put the mods back after service. I'd say get the 91 A8 so it is optimized for your socal octane. |

also if live near Anaheim, you can do a GSR flash tune which is not a piggy back. GSR and Enzo flash tunes are better than piggy backs IMO however you will be unable to change back to stock easily if you want to take your car in for service in stock form.

I've gone with the Dinan Stage 1 tune and their Exhaust. I like the sound of it but there is a more aggressive one out there. The Dinan does have a slight drone at certain RPM's but nothing that one can't live with. I've owned a few Vettes so this is mild. Tune wise you can read anything and everything on here about what's best. Personally I believe they are all pretty close to each other. It really just depends on what kind of $$$ you are willing to fork out. I've had great success with my Dinan but there is another on here who had a nightmare with his due to the Stealership F-ing him over. I bought it to keep everything under warranty in case anything happened. I have yet to do a catted down pipe yet but it's planned here in the next month or so. She is getting the Stage 3 Dinan tune and intercooler real soon since I track the car in summer months here in Texas.

Active 8 is a great option.
If you are doing downpipe as well, i would get the JB4 since it will autoclear any DP caused code when the A8 does not Have you made a decision on the downpipes yet? Wagner and ER are both great options

my 2 cents is, take your time, stop trying to rush into tunes.. start reading reading and search button here on multiple tunes and tons of threads..
- enjoy your car for at least 3k miles - get a feel for your dealers and service advisor - are you leasing or buying you can always get a RaceChip, JB4, ActiveAutowerke8 tune first and after a few months of use if you feel like you want more out of your car , get other mods Cheap Mods and Reversible and Much Easier than the latter 2 - Muffler Delete (Exhaust Sound) - Resonator delete (Exhaust Sound) Cost A bit more: - Downpipe (louder exhaust and 10-15whp) (labor may cost a bit) Cost more: - Borla ATAK Exhaust (if you want to upgrade your exhaust but not exactly needed) GSR is cool there's a few forum members who have personal experience with them Stubok e46m3lol to name some , you're in cali and theres lots of good options for you there Meet a few 328 folks with different tunes and get the hang of it.

If you live near GSR then that is the way to go in my opinion.
It's not detectable by BMW, or at least that's what my SA told me. And it won't effect your emissions test. I passed (albeit in TX) no problems whatsoever. I have stage 1+ (basically stage 1 with a DP cel delete - again no issues because of the delete). Stage 1 puts you right up against the Auto transmission torque limiter (though that may be an issue that's going away). So if you have a auto tranny, then I'd say start there. It raises. Boost to about 22lbs and is really solid and smooth. Bobby and Matt are great guys and stand behind their product. They will literally give you your money back if you don't like the tune (at least that was the promise when I got it). I would love to be that close to them. I would be in there for custom tunes to match every upgrade I made for sure. I may be going another direction with my tune, but that's because of a potential upgrade to internals and stage 2 turbo. Nothing to do with GSR. Like I said if I was in Cali... Well no question. |
