Is "sunroof delete" option available in USA for 3GT?
Is "sunroof delete" option available for USA order? My BMW sales guy said he can special order things like that but I doubt it. But he didn't sound sincere when he said it. I heard the order process is very strict.
My head comes awfully close to the sunroof, so I'd like to gain a couple extra inches in space by deleting it. It's not a matter of cost. |

The sunroof is standard in the US, and you can't delete it. I'm 6 foot, and I have my seat in the highest possible position. Headroom is not an issue for me. If you're taller just run the seat lower and your head will be in the same position that mine is. The GT has much more headroom than other 3 and 4 series.

Bill, the top of head was two inches underneath the edge of the sunroof, and that was with the seat all the way down. Sorry but I can't afford to break my neck every time I go over a speed bump or pot hole. I'm not even very tall person. But my height is in my torso, not my legs.
I thought my dealership sales guy was full of it when telling me he can do it. He sounded exactly like a yes man just being a yes man. |

I requested my dealer if I could have integrated rear window shades like the 5 series GT has, but BMW said that was not possible for a 3 series GT. If that request was denied, I am almost certain they can't make you a car without the sunroof. With that said, it is not bad driving the car always with the sunshade retracted, so in effect you get the height above your head that you need. But of course, if you are not willing to live with that compromise, you are out of luck with 3 GT.

Not really. Because the sunroof doesn't come all the way to the edge of the roof. So half my head would still hit. It's frustrating.

I could think of two options for you.
(a) Find a dealer who has done UK imports. Get a UK made BMW 3 GT without the sunroof. It will be somewhat of a nightmare but should be possible since compliance to US safety and emission standards should be easy for a car that is so similar to what they sell in USA. I could imagine dealer easily charging extra $10K for this. (b) Try the 'BMW Individual program'. Although typically used for custom paint colors, they might offer 'sunroof delete'. A quick look reveals it may not be available for 3 series, so you might have to make do with a 5 series GT (which is not bad IMO if you have the extra dough to spare). |

How tall are you JoeyO? I am 6'3 and have 4"+ clearance when my seat is all the way down. Are you sure you are configuring the seat properly? Also try tilting the front bottom of the seat up and back rest down a bit. It gives you good support and can utilize the seat extensions.
I have a 335xi GT with the sport seats, perhaps on a more base model without sport seats there isn't as much seat adjustment? In my natural driving position, I have my seat raised so I am about 2" below the roof. Try slowing down on bumps, I couldnt imagine hitting a bump so hard in my GT that it launched me out of my seat and hit my head on the roof. If I did, I would deserve the knock for not paying attention while driving. |

Getting 'off-book' mods with the GT is very difficult. Since such a small percentage of GTs are US spec BMW keeps the build cost down by limiting options. I've noticed that Euro spec base models not only don't have a sunroof, they don't even have fold-down rear seats. They sell so many more GTs in Euro spec that they can afford to do that for those, but not for ours. At least we don't have to get any color we want so long as it's black. |

Someone posted a picture of their GT with non-folding seats, I can't remember where they were from. He was asking if he could retro-fit them. In any event, a sunroof is something that I might have been inclined to pass on if I'd had the option, but now that I have it I'm glad that I do. On those rare occasions when I close the liner I feel claustrophobic.
