Winter Tyre Virgins ?

Those like myself who have never run winter tyre setup, whats your impressions ?

I am running 397 18inch alloys with Cont Wintercontacts. So far my impression is - they definitely have a wider tread because they pick up more stones on my drive !!

I do notice they inspire a bit more confidence in the frosty mornings, and they are hugely better in standing water - no aquaplaning at all. Given they are a half inch narrower (im running a square set up 225/45) than my 19s the grip is pretty decent.

No real noticeable change in ride quality - I still dispute that the M sport suspension needs adaptive with 19 in wheels because I don't find the ride on 18s any better than my 19s..

One big thing to remember with winters and it's really common mistake.

You can still fuck up on icy roads etc.

yep, same goes for Quattro and 4wd - many people start driving like they are invincible but with crappy tyres its more dangerous. My TT TDi Quattro was awful tbh.

Anything on crappy tyres is awful.

My biggest hate is people buying cheap tyres.

The number of smegheads that buy cheap budget tyres.

Does not matter what type of car it is.

Garage List
Don't forget tyres go out of date as well

Found that makes a huge difference

Had dome p7 on my manta for more years than I can remember then last year changed to avons even though the p7 had plenty of tread on them

Difference in steering handling and braking was night and day.

The contis are excellent tyres. I've just put mine back on. However during normal driving in normal conditions they don't provide anything close to the grip that the MPSSs deliver.

However compared to the Bridgestone S001s before that I had they were remarkably similar, with better ride to boot.

Just remember that you need to replace winter tyres at 3-4mm tread remaining - below that and they just won't work very well in the event that it does snow.

Happy Winter driving.
