Handing back to BMW Finance - scuffed alloy advice?
Hi,
Has anybody any experience of handing their car back to BMW Finance with minor scuffs to the alloys? I have two 2 inch scuffs to the outer rim of my 19" M light alloy star-spoke 403Ms on two wheels. Would they charge the price of two new alloys? Worth getting a fix for £300 or so? Any experiences would be appreciated. Cheers. |

Normally price of a refurb. Whats does your return standard booklet say?
I handed back a Merc with a couple of scuffs and they didnt bill me - they were more concerned about gouges or kerbing right around the rim. EDIT: See link for fair wear and tear... 50mm scuffing per wheel allowed http://issuu.com/bfwsn67/docs/fwt_20...oup_financial_ Last edited by AlfaM; 11-21-2015 at 06:13 AM.. |

I've not tried handing a financed car back to BMW, but have handed back a three year old Mini Cooper back to the lease company. They got a three year old car with a few small cosmetic blemishes. I had a three inch scuffed allow, but I sanded it, polished it and applied some lacquer - no complaints or fine.
Alloy wheel refurbishment starts from about £60 a wheel - not sure how good it would need to be for BMW, but it's not a brand new car and wear and tear needs to be taken into account I'd guess. |

I've returned merc's on finance with alloy mark and small damage to bodywork (shopping trolley!).
My experience is that they don't bill if you are trading in the car. I had a friend who returned car and walked away- he got billed. |

Mileage and general condition and age of car etc come in to it.
They check the car over based on the link below. I had some scuffs on my previous BMW and a dint in bonnet. Did not pay any cash out. http://issuu.com/bfwsn67/docs/fwt_20...oup_financial_ |

Thanks for your help folks.
The scuffs are less than 50mm, but deep enough to feel rough and have oxidized a bit. It's being used as a trade-in. I guess I just weigh up the odds and decide whether to take the chance. I'm guessing they'll charge a fortune if they decide the scuffs fall outside the parameters spec'd in the issuu document posted above. |

The BCA report for my merc stated it needed a bumper respray (~£150) and i was 2000 miles over (~£180). They took the car and all I got was a letter from Merc thanking me for returning the car in good nick, and that there would be no charges. That was without getting a motor from them. |

Wear and tear. There are published allowances for scuffs etc which lease operators and finance houses operate to.

My last car was leased and I read the fair wear & tear guide the lease company supplied.
I cast a critical eye over the car and saved up around £600 to ensure i had enough to cover the items that I thought exceeded the examples they gave in the guide. Ended up not paying a penny! so bought my self a private reg I would have expected at least one of the wheels would have been caught as there were 3 individual curb marks (from the missus, obviously!) and the allowance was one per wheel. The contact also said they would not charge for anything under £150 although i'm not sure if this was cumlulative or per item, I would assume cumulative. |

My wife got a £1.5k on a company car VW for what I think most honest people would consider to be wear and tear. It took a few letters to reduce it to £500ish. |

I would have thought if its a voluntary termination they will try and use any issue with the car to get as much money from you as possible, even though its your legal right to terminate after the half way mark of the agreement. No different from a salesman looking for anything that would devalue a part exchange valuation for example. I would get them repaired if the damage is noticeable and it shouldn't cost anywhere near £300. My diamond cut wheel was refurbished for £100 so the 403M's shouldn't be that expensive.

Lease plan state in their terms and conditions that this needs fixing. I have a quote from Perfection Alloys for diamond cut alloys at £125.00 for a full refurb and £65 for a scuff repair. However I was a little unsure if the repair will work and remove the scratch without notice. As my summer wheels are now off the car for the winter. I thought I would get them sorted ready for next year. Anyone had a scuff repair and were they happy with it? Or should I just go for a full refurb? Opinion is divided by different wheel refurb companies. Dickie |

Tend to agree that unless you are really looking for it, the repair should pretty much merge in to the 'allowable' stone chips. |

If you owned the car then you would either have to repair them before sale or lose value on trade in condition.
This is just crowd sourced opinion on if you will get away with it. |

When I leased my 640 the booklet that came with it detailed the charges that applied for various things and the charge to repair alloys was cheaper than I would have had to pay to get them refurbished. They noted 2 wheels needed refurb but I was never charged anything. Granted mine was a lease but picked up by 2 very professional chaps who plugged a laptop in and gave it a thorough inspection, don't know if yours is a PCP or lease and whether that makes a difference.
