Exhaust sound vs. other cars

Ferrari and Porsche have figured out how to make turbo cars sound good, BMW just can't compete.

I just keep hearing a 9th grade tuba player completely missing his note during this video.

Sounds better with the flaps CLOSED and that is something you should NEVER say with a performance car.

I haven't heard Ferrari's turbo, but Porsche's turbo sounds like ass, just like BMW's

It's so sad. They really could have done a better job. I don't understand where they went wrong. Is it the exhaust or the twin turbo setup? The M2 or m235i with MPE sounds so much better.

I'm going for a final test drive tomorrow in the M3 and sound will be a major factor for me to seal the deal. I think aftermarket exhausts don't solve the problem and just mask it with unnecessary loud noise you expect to hear from some ricer shit box. This is all based on YouTube vids so I hope it sounds better in person. But then I've never heard a bad e92 or e46 vid. People need to remember that.

There is a m3 in my neighbourhood and when I think it's it driving down my street I jump to my balcony only to discover its something like a Honda shitbox. This says it all. A m3 should be instantly recognisable. Just like a e92 or e46. You could take a blind fold test any day!

Agreed

It's even more disappointing given how good BMW did with the N54 and N55 exhausts. There's no denying the S55 is awkward.

335is cold start video below and revs start at 1:30, really a great sound.

I do enjoy the M performance exhaust on the S55. My friend has it and it's great. It sounds fantastic actually. But it is so obnoxious when letting off heavy throttle.

I loved my n54 135i, sounded awesome.

I wonder if maybe we just need some southern complexity and just weld some glasspacks to a straight pipe or a flowmaster?

Well sound is really the only negative aspect about this car, so of course people will talk about it. Either as an excuse to keep their older M3, hate on something they can't afford, or move on from BMW altogether by going a different brand like Porsche etc.

I think you hit it on the head.

It is most probably the twin turbo which makes the aural print of two, three-cylinder engines running together.

The N variants instead have a single turbo and so generate a six-cylinder engine sound.

The GTS does sound menacing but not exotic. And the sound quality is poor probably because the microphone saturated being so close and the 240p resolution also minimized the dynamic range of the sound track.

I am sure owning a GTS would make any owner pretty happy behind the wheel.

I cringe every time my neighbor pulls away in his M4. I sure hope the M2 sounds as good as we think it will or I will by in my E90 M3 and 360 Modena for a long time.

I feel the same way, there's a guy with a M4 just around the corner and he always pushes his car close to red line down the road. Every time it reminds me why I just can't get myself to get a M4. It's such a pity though, ever other thing about this car is great...

Ok, please forgive the rant that I am about to make:

There seem to be a lot of decisions being made and minds being made up on this site using only video clips filmed by IPhones and mini-video cameras and their tiny little microphones, which are then played on laptops and PCs and tablets with their crappy, itty-bitty little speakers.

Now, don't get me wrong. I totally agree that the M Performance Exhaust for the 335i (and included with the 335iS package) sounds great. I know. I had one for almost 3 years. Loved the sound.

But I've read hundreds of comments on Bimmerpost how awful the 2015 AND 2016 M3s and M4s sounded. TERRIBLE. AWFUL. THE WORLD IS COMING TO AN END. BMW HAS LOST THEIR WAY. NO CAR HAS EVER SOUNDED WORSE IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD. BUY AN AUDI, A CORVETTE, A PORSCHE, A SKODA,ANYTHING INSTEAD OF AN M4!!!!

I drove a 2015 several times when I was car shopping, and agreed to an extent. I listened to all of the crappy little video clips, but wasn't convinced either way. The 2016 was supposedly better, but who could tell? They weren't available at dealerships when I was working on my order. The sound seemed to vary widely by who was recording, what equipment they were using, etc. And remember that the bass hertz on speakers is almost always of poor quality unless you use a subwoofer. But I had - - at least in my mind - - decided that I was going to need to spend $3-4,000 on an aftermarket exhaust as soon as I got my M3 back from Germany.

Then I picked up my 2016 M3 in Munich 3 weeks ago, and spent 8 days driving through Germany, the Czech Republic and Austria. Wow. It sounds NOTHING like the silly video clips played on cheap ass computer speakers. It's deep, throaty, has less rasp, and generally will scare the hell out of the neighbors and dogs and birds and sleeping babies as you roar by them at 5 in the morning. Ask the dozens of bystanders at the Welt what they thought as my Delivery Specialist started up the car, opened the valves and revved the motor, or what they thought as I did my (2 very fast and reckless) victory laps around the Welt!

Here's my caution: Don't judge until you hear it in person. The 2016s are much better, and if you set your M settings to keep the valves open, it sounds FABULOUS!!!!! It's not just as good as the 335iS, it sounds BETTER. Can you buy a louder aftermarket exhaust? I'm sure you can. I've had super loud exhausts (Borlas, Scorpions, Gorillas, AFE, Banks, etc.) on V-8 Mustangs, M3s, and my diesel pickups. But the stock 2016 exhaust sounds pretty darn good to my ears. One roared by me today on the highway (M3 in Mineral Gray) and it was awesome.

So until you come face to face with the 2016 beast, drive it, adjust it, live with it for a few days, don't make these snap judgments.

There, I'm finished now......

(this is bound to generate some really interesting responses, I'm sure....)

The difference is that you own and drive an F8X and 99.999% of those that continually bash, do not. Those that appreciate the sound are called fanboys, tone deaf, liars or some other derogatory name.

lol....I am prepared to accept being called all of those things! I will laugh out loud every time I go out to my garage, get in my amazing, powerful, gorgeous, fast, torquey M3, start it up, and roar off towards the Oregon coast, or up through the twisty mountain passes in the Oregon Cascades, or through the Willamette Valley's rolling hills and beautiful winding driving roads for a wine tasting with the sunroof open, the radio blaring and the 6MT clicking through the gears as I near the redline!

Well I have driven, ridden in, and listened to an M4 with MPE and like I said in my post, it is a great sounding car. However, the over run explosion when you let off throttle is terrible. Virtually every exhaust does that. That is my gripe with the car.

Of course iPhones and computer speakers don't capture or portray the sound well, they don't for any car. But they do give you a good idea.

So until you come face to face with the 2016 beast, drive it, adjust it, live with it for a few days, don't make these snap judgments.

There, I'm finished now......

(this is bound to generate some really interesting responses, I'm sure....)

Man you're crazy! I love that explosion sound lol
