That key is as big as my phone! What are you supposed to do with that thing when you're out of the car, it's too big for my pants pocket unless I want a huge bulge in the side of my pants. No problem in the winter when i have a jacket on, but a pain in the summer. Cool gadget, but I hope it's an option and a smaller key is standard. It would be cool if my fingerprint could unlock and start the car, then I wouldn't have to carry anything with me!

Cool stuff and I like it...........however the system hardware seems a bit laggy. You can tell from when the person was swiping thru the different menus that there is a minor delay when changing thru different menus.
It is noticeable. But I guess it can't be helped since it is a first-gen product. Maybe in later versions, the hardware will be improved so response times will improve as well....... |

The fob is way smaller than most phones. I have a Samsung S4 and it's a lot smaller than it. FYI.. I wear a size #10 glove so I'd say my hands are medium sized. Here are some real pics of the new key fob...

Well considering how big phones have gotten I guess you're right, my phone is still "small" I guess. In the video, it looks as big as the palm of the person's hand and when he slips it in the charging sleeve in the armrest it looks huge, but in your hand it does looks smaller. Still I just don't like big keys, it's a personal preference. Too bad it isn't also a remote starter for the winter, or is it?

Nowadays when phone hardware and software is secure enough to make payments, I imagine that it wouldn't be so hard to make them secure enough to start a car. That would be an option I would pay for, not a huge brick with only one use, like this key.

Aside from it being huge and requiring charging, the lag and choppiness when you swipe looks atrocious. The novelty probably wears off pretty quickly.

Looks cool. I hope the screens on the LCD will transition smoothly. That youtube video is pretty choppy and lagging when user slides the finger across the touch screen.
Curious to see how the new E-Class will get it done. Supposedly driver will be able to open and start the car with a smartphone. http://blog.caranddriver.com/so-much...asss-gadgetry/

Useless, by the time it gets released in the US, all you can use it for is to lock and unlock.
Look at the BMW remote app, you can't even do door lock/unlock or fan. It only can honk and turn on the light. I think it is more usefull if they just enchance the app to let us use our "smart" phone to lock and unlock the car, plus other features. Not that hard to do.

I believe this is the wrong strategy when it comes to keys. People don't want to carry multiple devices when they can be consolidated into one. Sorry BMW, but smart phones win the "what screen do I want in my pocket". Could you imagine having this on a key chain? Not to mention the financial bitch slap that one would incur if they lost/broke it. IMO keys should be progressing with circuit miniaturization with comfort access like features and leave the data display to our phones.

I don't care if I can say to someone: Look, my keys have a display! However I get mad if I can't say that my car has better steering than Mercedes. Honestly, make a solid metal, normal key with smartphone access optional, fix the steering and BMW, stop being distracted by useless gimmicky things.

Seriously NFC or Bluetooth port this functionality into the phone app at this point. My standard fob is too big as it is when its on my keyring, which only has like 4 keys on it. This is an utter waste of R&D time and money when an app can and would do the same thing without as much added cost and bulge. Sure you'd have to change something on the car receiving end but as people above have said if a phone is secure enough for financial transactions its easily secure enough to start/lock/unlock a car.
I'd happily pay whatever premium they are looking to get for the key to have the same functionality in my phone, but I would never want an even bigger key fob (or phone)!
