Valve cover gasket DIY

Looked around and surprisingly I could not find a DIY for replacing the valve cover gaskets.
Anyone have the TIS, pictures, torque specs, and tightening pattern etc.?

Thanks! Forgot all about that site
Not to sound like an ingrate but I see the torque should be 15 Nm and 17Nm for the oil trap to cover

Is it really that easy per the guide? The pictures make it seem so easy because the engine is on a stand and not in a engine bay lol

User alxmlr789 did the valve cover gasket using OEM gaskets.

You need to remove the plenum, intake (drivers side) fuel injector plugs, coil pack plugs, coil packs, coolant reservoir (pass side only). After they are all removed, tie wrap all the wires up as far as you can to give you adequate enough clearance to clear the camshaft.

I actually goofed on my drivers side and am leaking a bit of oil. I need to pull this stuff and reinstall the gasket on my drivers side. Both sides should be around a 3 hour job. Pretty straightforward, but can be a tedious job if you aren't patient.

No DIY other than the other link and the workshop manual.

Yep, no DIY.

I will add some advice, look into replacing the bolts - more specifically the "crush grommets" that are seated in the valve cover. These tend to leak after they have been reused, and unfortunately they only come with the bolts. 4.75 per bolt/grommet. This was the source of one of my leaks.

Also, pay close attention to when you reinstall the crank case breather. The metal sleeves that bolt to the valve cover seemed to be a bit loose, which let the breather pull away from the VC and spews oil all over the place. What a stupid design. I used a set of small washers to essentially "lock" the sleeves into the breather.

May not happen on every job, but sure was a pain in the ass on mine.

Im, going to be doing this as well since my Passenger Side Gasket seems to be seeping (didn't take time to investigate, but i see oil stains.) Doing it soon with my Indy that will also be doing the Throttle Body Actuators at the same time.

Question. I found the parts for the gasket no problem, but anyone know the PN for the bolts? (will be replacing all of them, might as well) Also, how many will i need for the whole job? Thanks!

PS. my oil filler cap is also leaking... many posts on this already, but anyone can chime in the most effective way to fix that? Or just simply buy the updated cap every other time i change my oil. (My OCI is quite frequent.... usually every half year or 7500-10,000km which ever comes first). Thanks!

YMMV. I am at 114k miles on my 2011 with the original oil cap. My oci is 7500. It has leaked on me once and that was the one time I did not remove the gasket to clean it. All the other time, I would take the gasket off, clean it, put it back, and put a smear of oil on the lip on the valve cover before putting the cap back on. None of these other time I have experienced leak. I think the leak is because oil got behind the back side of the gasket and the oil cap (which happens when you take the cap off). If that side stays dry, I don't have any leak. Good luck.

Another tip that might work is to bend the ears back on the underside of the cap. This will allow the cap to sit tighter on the gasket seal.

Are you sure the tightening torque spec is 15nm ? Because according to real oem the valve cover bolts are M6 which state need to be 10nm. Can someone confirm this ? Thanks

Torque spec appears to be 10nm for the bolts.

I'm doing it right now. One valve cover off. I'm taking my time as this is my second car. Gasket and new bolts won't come in from ECS until later this week.

Can you please post pictures while doing the job?
I would like to tackle this as well by myself.

Make sure you cover up your motor while the covers are off.

In case anyone is interested I found the part number on the Bolt/Grommet

11127841217

BMW told me they dont stock the E9X valve cover gaskets nor this bolt because they never leak. I asked why I had oil on my spark plug threads. He response was "you should just pay and have it diagnosed." He wasn't aware I just picked my car up on Friday after BMW had kept my car for 3 weeks. #hardpass

I don't think my gaskets are leaking either. I believe based on the trail of oil, that it's coming from my oil filler cap.
I don't know about never leaking though... Smh at some dealers..
