Windshield Replacement
Hey all,
My windshield developed a ~1ft crack from a stone (or rock?) flung at it from a truck, so it needs to get replaced. I called BMW Grand River and the price they gave me was $2,050.00+tax!!! I thought I was used to sticker shock, having owned a BMW, but they still manage to surprise me. Can anyone recommend a shop in the K-W/Cambridge/Guelph area? Surely there is a shop that can install an OEM windshield and cut that price in half. - Grant |

Not in your home area. If you are willing to travel, then call them up and see how much ?

Windshield IS covered by comprehensive insurance, but my deductible is $1000. The place recommended by bobblehead is $700.
It seems the internet is littered with horror stories, so most people say you should use a shop that comes recommended. |

I'm all for saving money, but I'm not sure I'd trust some Kijiji rando who would do it for less than 17% of the cost compared to BMW dealer.... Windshield is a pretty important structural piece of the car....that's just my personal opinion...

Just wanted to share, I just had my windshield replaced today by Autoglass Worx. Every thing looks good. I guess time will tell if I have any issues with leaks or rust, but visual inspection to me looks like brand new. Brought the car in for 9am and it was ready around 1pm. They replace the glass and put a new trim on the sides as well.
I had ordered the OEM glass for the car, I have HUD and rain sensor wipers. Cost me $1,000 cash. BMW of Mississauga quoted me just shy of $1,500 for the same job.

For my followup, I ended up using Speedy Autoglass... ignoring advice to use a shop that comes recommended.
It all worked out really well. Cost was $700 for OEM (rain sensor, no HUD). They booked me in next day, free shuttle to work and back (they pay for the taxi ride), and it was done by noon. I scrutinized the work afterwords, it all looks really good... perfectly spaced around the edge, rain sensor works, etc. Not sure what else to look for?? |

Are you saying that a Canadian sold windshield should have an American 'Department of Transportation' code on it?
My windshield has the Pilkington logo on it in the corner (which is OEM), I don't remember seeing a DOT code. |

Move to Florida. No matter what insurance you have, it's covered at no cost to you.
Call every place you can get a hold of, ask them for OEM replacement with no tint and compare prices. Some of them come with a purple tint or different shades. Also, there is a part near the cowl (not sure if right name) that needs to be replaced when the windshield is replaced. The bottom part of the windshield sits on it. Usually you have to provide the installer with this item. It goes near the part of the car where the windshield meets the dash board. I've had my e90 windshield replaced three times for cracks! |

If you have insured your vehicle you won't need to pay for windshield repair as insurance claims will help you to cover the cost of auto glass repair.

Make sure that they don't use a blade to cut through the adhesive holding in the broken windshield. Sometimes they have too much blade extended and actually cut/score the car chassis and most of the time they don't bother to paint the cut/score. Then they install the windshield...years later that unpainted cut/score rusts and compromises the new seal that they installed...water will start leaking.
I purchased a used vehicle and it developed a water leak. The windshield was removed with the proper tools (not a blade) and it was clear by the rusted cut/score that the windshield had been replaced by the previous owner and the repair was done as I described above (using a blade instead of the proper windshield extraction tools). My next vehicle was 1 week old when a stone chip turned into a crack that spanned the width of the windshield. When I went to the glass repair shop I explained to them that I will only have them perform the job if they used proper windshield extraction tools. They said that they always use proper extraction tools and not blades to remove windshields. When I picked up the vehicle I noted that they forgot to replace a piece of trim along the top edge of the windshield. When I looked at it more closely I noticed a fresh cut/score from a blade!!!! NOT HAPPY. The owner of the shop extracted the window, the vehicle was sent to a body shop and the cut/score was sanded, primed, painted and I had them note on the receipt that this repair needed to be done because of their error (in case it came back to haunt me later). |
