Trouble starting (battery or starter?)

For the past few months I've noticed my e90 is having trouble starting. Insert the fob, push the button, and I have to hold the starter button down for 2-3 seconds for it to start (initially when I got the car in 2010 it immediately started, as in right away after you pressed the starter button). Today it gave up completely, it just made the engine starting sound for about seconds and then just stopped. Waited five seconds, tried it a second time and the same result. Waited about a minute, pressed the button a third time, and about 2-3 seconds later is started up as before. I haven't noticed the car having trouble idling.

On a similar note, a week ago I noticed after I started the car up, the DVD/Nav/Screen was dark. The radio still worked and we could change the stations with the steering wheel controls & iDrive control in the center divider. Had the entire DVD/Nav/Screen system replaced back in 2012. Not sure if that is related though.

Does this sound like a battery problem, a starter problem, something else, or need more info to help determine (and what type of info)?

I appreciate any and all feedback. Thank you!

Can be many things but you need to read codes first. You can always start with adding a bottle of Techron Fuel injector cleaner. Try that and lets us know.

If it just cranks, then it sounds like your HPFP, which is covered under extended warranty.

If it's very weak and cranking very slow, then battery is a possibility.

Thanks for the replies. When you mean "check the codes", are you referring with an OBD2?

I checked for any CCID errors with the stalk and there weren't any. I don't own an OBD2 so I'll have to purchase one. I purchased it as a CPO and the CPO warranty has expired, so I am thinking the OBD2 will be a good investment.

I had my water pump replaced a little over 2 years ago, but good to know that if it is the HPFP that can be covered too.

This may or may not be related, but I've also started to notice a little hesitation/jerkiness when accelerating (starting about halfway to WOT). Under easy acceleration there isn't any issue. I'm actively doing research on what that could possibly be.
