Sunroof rattle and fix
Here's a weird one for the crowd. I have had this insanely irritating loud rattle in the headliner for the past couple weeks. Just didn't have time to investigate it or drop by the dealer. I have an e91 with the panoramic double sunroof.
Well today, I had to brake sharply due to a moron encounter on the road. Next time I glanced in the rearview, there was this black thing dangling down out of the sunroof! Startled me a bit. Turned out to be a rubber seal for the tray along the back edge of the sunroof opening. It was still attached on one end, the other end had been thumping against the inside of the headliner like a drumstick on a drum and making all the racket. The hard braking flipped it out of the opening. There is one on each edge of the narrow tray that spans the roof, this was the one towards the back of the car. The seal just pushes onto the edge of the tray, I was able to get my fingers in there and work it back in place starting on the still attached side, it did not seem damaged. No idea how or why it came off, it does not seem to be contacted by the inner cover or anything. Very odd, but an easy fix once I found it! I also took a minute to put a bit of silicone grease on the seat latches and the latches for the cargo cover. They creak if I don't do it every six months or so.
