Oil change

When's a good time to change the oil on my 2009 E92 335i? Does every 5k miles sound about right? Or is that too soon? I know these N54s run best when they are well maintained.

Thanks!

5k Sounds about right. If you mainly travel on the freeway, you can push it to 7k.

Change mine every 7.5K

Back when I was under Maintenance Plan - oil changes were free every 15K - I still changed it myself in between...

I've been doing 7k since 50k miles (should have done that interval sooner. oh well).

I do every 5k, however according to my last Blackstone Labs report, I could stretch it out to 7-8k. I just do it at 5k regardless though.

Personally I think anywhere between 5 and 10k miles is OK.

Do yourself a favor and get one of these http://www.qwikvalve.com

5-7K is what I've heard most from pros at indie shops and on these boards and what I've done for the last 2 years since owning my N52.

According to the indies I've spoken to biggest problem is that the filters start to wear out if you go much past that. They (and many of us here) think that 15K is insane for the filter, but that the oil is probably fine.

5-7k is what I usually go by. I wouldn't feel comfortable stretching it past that.

I'd do 5K.

Tons of stories of people running leaky injectors without really knowing it and getting more than average fuel diluting the oil causing internal engine issues.

I do 5K just to be on the safe side.

7.5k is perfectly fine. You don't need to go down to 5k like a lot of people here unless you only drive it a mile or 2 at a time and it never warms up.

Now this is advice. A lot of time and money goes into developing a proper algorithm to model the oil's wear based on engine usage. These oil life meters are very accurate systems. Asking about oil change intervals really just brings out opinions. There is nothing wrong with sticking by what you know, but you are guaranteed to get several conflicting answers by starting any form of oil thread.

So 15k miles? yea right!!!

They only tell you 15k because they, BMW, don't want do more oil changes if your car is still manufacturer warranty/service. Saves them money and time.
And once your car is past the 50k warranty, they can give a shit about what happens to your car, and that is when our cars start becoming more fragile.

BMW changed the service interval to 10k down from 15k for 2014 model year cars, even though they use some of the same engines as older models. So even BMW is kind of admitting 15k is too long.

For the record, I never directly said follow 15k oil change intervals. I said follow the engine oil life monitoring system's wear curve. If you don't like 15k changes, change it every 50% of oil life or whatever floats your boat. The oil monitoring system is very accurate in terms of how you are wearing on your oil.

To be honest, I've never even heard of this oil monitoring system. My buddy drove his 2009 328i to 21k miles without this "oil monitoring system" thing going off. 21k miles of high rev driving!!! Even his SA was surprised and impressed.
I had to advise him to take his car into the shop to get his oil changed....

So no, I don't want to trust this "oil monitoring system" because it might be too late when it finally chimes.
I'd rather be more proactive than reactive, especially since I drive 60 miles a day to/from work.
