So I just moved to New York, and the roads have been rough. I commute 30 miles a day and just noticed this.

Will I be okay for my morning commute? It is holding pressure as of now, and I didn't notice any problems driving.

Either way, is this tire a goner?

Thanks.

Likely from a pothole. It's hard to say how long it'll last. Might last 2 days, might last 2 months. Either way get a new tire ordered through Tirerack and get it put on.

My stock RFT did the same thing (less severe) after hitting a pothole.

I had a bulge like that on one of my tires for months last fall. I knew it wasn't the safest and could blow at any time but I was going to put winters on and I was waiting for spring to buy a new set of tires anyway.

So yes it should be fine for tomorrow mornings commute

OP, I've seen that sort of thing something like eight times.

I've only lost air pressure twice; took about 2 weeks the first time, about 2 months the second time. When it does let go, you pretty much immediately go to zero pressure no matter what you do.

The other times the tires worked okay (bit out-of-balance): I've just gone ahead and replaced the damaged tires.

Don't push the damaged tire too hard, get it replaced pretty soon.

So the damage to the tire is definitely permanent?

Thanks

Put it this way; you'll most probably be fine for tomorrow's commute, but it is definitely something you will want to change as soon as possible.

Rule number one when driving (in almost every scenario), never ever skimp on your tires. They're your means of keeping you planted to the ground and keeping you relatively safe.

Don't chance it for too long.

Oh yes, permanent. What you have there are the plys (spelling?) and rubber laminates...well, de-laminating (separating). This is now a permanent weak spot in the tire and will go bad sooner or later.

Having said that, I have heard of a few people who had sidewall bubbles and drove on those tires until the tread wore out. It's a gamble. The damage IS there.

Yeah definitely get that changed ASAP, that tire has 1 foot in the grave and 1 foot on a banana peel.

It looks like you have 18s and 189s, which is what I'm running right now.

A side-wall blow out can be deadly...fortunately I run nothing but Michelins- which have always "gracefully" broke their sidewalls...thankfully

+1 Change it ASAP, the cost of the tire will not compare to your front right finder, washer jug, finder liner, brake line and headlight assembly being ripped to pieces when that tire blows then shreds... That would be just about the worse case with the exception of taking out the guy next to you!
