Service Records
I was just at a BMW shop (not the one I bought my car from). They printed out the service records for some reason. I asked if I could have them and they said its property of BMW. WTF it's my car! Is this the norm?

Yes, it is - BMW's policy is to not provide print outs of previous service for when you did not own the car.
Now, some dealerships don't necessarily follow this rule so your experience may vary depending on dealership.

Totally normal can't give records out if you bought the car used.
There is a form you can get from BMW NA and fax it to them and they will email you service records of your car one time for no charge of you can prove ownership

My dealer told me they're unable to release them to me because there's personal info of the previous owner on them.
However a random sales rep printed them out for me after asking what brought me in that day! He just sharpied out the old owners info. |

I was able to obtain service records for my car before I purchased it. I demanded it, and was prepared to walk out on the sale.....They were very diligent about removing all personal information from the previous owner before handing them over.
Again, this is specific to my dealership. They were extremely helpful, and a pleasure to deal with through the process.

See, I'm not alone on this. I'm 0 for 2 on getting printed records on cars that I own.

I sent an email to the SA at my dealership and got all the records. There was no personal info on them, but boy was I surprised at what I did see. About $6k work of work in the last year before I bought the car all paid for by a 3rd party warranty the PO had purchased. It's making me think about getting a warranty myself.
