Possible engine temp issue ?

But of a bizzar thing happened this morning, I went out for a short drive, it was only around 12 miles. The car got up to temp normaly and during the drive it seemed absolutely fine. When I pulled up on the drive, opened the car door I noticed a smell, smelt like the engine was really hot which I thought was odd as it was realtively cold out and only a short drive.

Then I noticed the engine fan was running, I got Back in the car and truned on the ignition to check the temp guage and it was normal. The whole situation just seems odd, it's never done anything like that before, are there any known issues ?

I had the exact same thing a few months back. I went for a 4 mile drive in zero ambient temp, cold start. Engine smelt hot and fans on in just 4 miles.

Had it in at the dealers to see if there was anything amiss. Nothing.

Can only imagine it was a DPF regeneration. Hasn't reoccurred since.

Sounds very much exactly what you get with a regen, admittedly if it's petrol you need to take it to dealers

Yes it's a Diesel - no idea if it was DPF regen, only experience of that was a good few years back in my 123d when it didn't like the Evolve remap, but that would just reduced power nothing like this.

Yup, DPF regen was in progress. The temperature guage doesn't indicate this.

Your exhaust would have been ticking/pinging as it was cooling down. The exhaust really heats up. Giveaway is also the burnt caramel aroma.

You can sense a DPF regen, the car favours higher revs - just hanging onto gears a bit longer. Maybe not so noticeable on the motorway, but in town you notice it.

When mine was new, if I'd given it a bit of stick, I'd get a 'hot' kind of smell. Hard to describe but smelt almost electrical, similar to if I'd left the iron on for example. I had it a few times in the early days probably until I'd done about 2k miles but after seeking advice, I put it down to some of the protective coatings on various components/engine parts being burnt off.

Having had an electrical fire in a previous car I knew it was something different and wasn't overly concerned. As with all these things though, if you're worried about it get it checked.

Gents, thanks for the replys

So seems it's nothing to get overly worried about then, like I say it's never happened before so I guess I'll just keep an eye on things and make sure it dosent keep happening then.

Definitely sounds like interrupting, (or just completing) a typical active DPF regeneration.

Exhaust gas temperature is increased for the burn off. This will also elevate the engine coolant temperature, but will likely have less affect on the oil temperature, as it is of shortish duration and also be regulated by the oil cooler.

Always wise to check the coolant level, when cooled down, to ensure there isn't an issue.

Cheers Pete, yes that was my intention to check coolant level later when the cars had chance to cool.

Sounds very much like a dpf regeneration to me too.

Depending on the journeys you have done recently 700 to 800 miles is perfectly reasonable to trigger what is probably the first one.

Always a bit alarming when you first notice it (and, I think the dealer at handover should at least ask if you're aware of what dpf regen is like, just so you're prepared for it)
