Picking up my car tomorrow and wondered from people on the ground what is the best way across from Middlesborough to Carlisle?

Any help/guidance gratefully appreciated

Go via Bedale, Leyburn, Hawes using the A684.

Damn site more fun than the A66, however don't get carried away with it all.

If its not too late consider (for the scenery)

Get on A1 north

Come off at A68 junction for Bishop auckland

At Crook roundabout take A689 along Weardale eg Wolsingham Frosterley etc

Reach Alston and join A686 coming up from Hexham, turn left go through Alston then climb over Hartside to join the M6 at Penrith.

Not fast but boy or boy, a run in a million.

Yeah another good run.

Personally I can't stand the A66 and avoided it like the plague when I lived up there.

For some decent fun driving, A686 or 684, decent bends, straights, views, fast and slow bits.

The A66 will be a straightforward A to B drive.

Quite so Brigand , another 2 fatalities on the A66 yesterday - all too common I'm afraid. I shake a little bit as I cross the dual carriageway to go straight ahead from side roads!!

I hope Chompers takes either of our routes for pleasure.

Yeah I used to live in Bedale (RAF Leeming).

I witnessed about 3 major fatalities on the A66.

It was bad enough having to commute along the A1 and cross over it in places.

Btw that's proper winter driving A689 or 684, snow and ice and big dry stone walls

A66 awful unless you like following lorries and lots of speed cams. It is your best route home though- just watch out for those pesky white vans!

You should have made an overnight trip out of it and took the new motor up the east coast and across to Loch Lomond and down again

Thats a nice Easter present for you..enjoy

Batteries recharged, 19's in the boot of the Mini to swap over to the vert in Southampton then up the country for the pick up

Who wants a guess at the total mileage tomorrow then

A proper route would have been via Dublin to Holyhead, A5 to A41 to M54 to M6 North AND then A684 to Middlesbrough.

Return via A689, M6 South, M54, A41, A5 etc

Only a few miles but some classic roads

That used to be my Leeming to Valley drive (Anglesey) obviously just going as far as Wales.

Hey Chompers, how come you're going for a 320d anyway? You seem a keen car enthusiast - thought you'd be going for a 6 cylinder and have a little more fun?

Good spot my friend

Having spent a good few evenings on is great forum, a came to the conclusion that I would ignore everything and do the opposite to any suggestion made on here So I bought

A 320d MSport Touring sDrive 6M in Black Sapphire. Going by the experts, it has the wrong engine, wrong body style, wrong drive train, its manual which is wrong and its the wrong colour due to the up keep. It also doesn't have ACS springs, Vis pack, adaptive suspension and probably a whole lot of other things

However I think its fab and it is the family wagon after all

Would also just like to add a big thank you to all above who posted

The drive was over the Pennines was great fun and a great way to see how the new car performed. I will post in more detail my findings when I'm back after a few days away with the family.

Happy Easter to you all

Glad to hear the drive wasn't entirely traffic carnage then. I had to drive from Inverness to Edinburgh then to Glasgow Airport on Good Friday and it was brutal. Was thinking it mightn't have been a great time to pick up a new motor!
