experience with Sirius....

trying to decide if Sirius is a good option to add - -appreciate any feedback on experiences (quality/ reception/ etc). I normally listen to news/ business and occasional music so thought stock audio ok for this purpose (I have most other options but yes I am trying to save $1900 for sound and the 10 speakers stock I believe is same as 328i audio so may go to dealer to try it out). As an aside, disgraceful that BMW did not put in Logic 7 for their topline 3 series but standard on 335i....thanks

I have Sirius on my '06 ML and I like it for trips. Around town I get a lot of drop outs from trees and such--not sure if it's peculiar to the ML with its antenna hidden under a plastic roof panel. I'm not fond of the monthly fee. For the M3 I'm going with HD radio, along with the iPod adapter, which I think will be sufficient. Edit: I'm getting Enhanced Premium Sound, as well.

I currently have Sirius radio in my 335. I don't like the idea of having to pay a monthly subscription, but I do like having sat. radio. I have such a poor selection of radio stations in my area so having a commmercial free alternative is great. I also have an I-Pod adapter.

I ordered it for my M3, with I-Pod and Enhanced Prem. Sound. It's expensive, but like anything else, when you want to use it, you want the best. It's kind of like having too much horsepower (we all know that there is no such thing, haha.).

I have Sirius on my e92 328i and love it. I had no choice, it was a car the dealer had ordered with this option. I was skeptical at first but BMW and Sirius pay for the first year of service. After a year I liked it soo much that I continue to pay for it. Im getting the M3 with it. Its $12.95/month, discounts available for advance payments. If you cant stand commercials, or constantly looking for the right station, this is a great option.

Regarding the sound system on the 328i, I have no complaints. Not planning on getting the enhanced audio on the M3.

I, too, am an advocate of satellite radio. At first I didn't like paying the monthly fee, but I can't remember the last time I listened to local radio stations. The sounds quality leaves something to be desired over traditional radio, but for a couple extra dollars a month you can supposedly upgrade the sound quality.

I couldn't live without Sirius. I also have an iPod adapter.

Depending on your sound system, the quality difference between say, FM radio or a CD and Sirius will be more noticable. No, it's not the greatest sound quality, because it is compressed, but some stations are better than others (less compressed) and I am used to it now. The sound quality is a non-issue for me.

The ability to listen to so many different types of music, without commercials, is awesome. I have really expanded my own music library with Sirius. My iPod has a lot of stuff on it now that it wouldn't have otherwise had. There is just so much stuff you can't get on regular radio or searching for good music otherwise. I just love Sirius.

The fee doesn't bother me at all, I pay for a whole year in advance so at $142, that is about the same as one month of my cable/internet bill. No big deal.

I would not go without Sirius in my daily driver. I am totally hooked. The product is great, customer service just SO-SO. As I needed a refund for Sirius on a car that I had sold, and it took them 2 months to process it.

If you like music, you won't be disappointed.

Thank you for the responses.

Hans... when you say compressed, it's at least as a 128kps MP3?

As you say, what I like about those radios, is that you get ti know new bands... But I will not buy the radio if the sound quality is at least not digital. Remember that HD radio also has song/artist info.

I thought i said it but i can't find my post. Maybe i replied to a similar thread in another forum.

My opinion of sirius is that it is completely useless. Have it in the e550 and I will not be renewing it when the time comes. Channels do not play any good music and I would rather listen to my ipod.

Depends on your taste in music, I guess. I found several channels I like.

It is in the 32 to 50kps, as some channels have "better" compression than others... yes, it is sorry but somehow it works decent. And I've never listened to Sirius in any of my cars with an OEM sound system, only aftermarket amps and speakers... and still sound decent to me, not great at all.

I like Sirius because they really have a great variety of great songs; probably it has cost me some $50 to $60 extra in iTunes so far by buying songs that I listen first on Sirius.

Sirius is leagues better than vanilla radio but it does have its problems too. About 6 months ago when i still had it in my truck some stations were starting to play commercials. Which is ironically enough their biggest selling point. Also if you live in a big city with lots of bridges be ready for it to cut out alot. Here in San Antonio everytime i go under an overpass it cuts out for a few seconds. Not a deal breaker but kind of annoying when they are playing a song you really like.

I have Sirius in my car and XM in my wife's. I can't imagine going back to non-satellite radio again. I love it. I prefer Sirius over XM but that's completely subjective.

As sad as it is, Krock is still better for alternative, 97.1/105.1 are still better for hip-hop and z100 is still better for pop crap. Also ipod fills in the gaps. I don't find a need for satellite ever.

SAVE YOUR MONEY. I had it on my 06. Used it a few times, but between my MP3 player, CD, and FM radio, just never needed it. Only get it if you KNOW you will drive regularly on long trips or through dead spots otherwise you KNOW your MP3 player will have all your favs on it anyway. I can tell you 100% for sure I felt I wasted the money. I had no need for all the different programming. Bottom line, if you don't know by now that you NEED it, you simply don't. This is from my personal experience, not guessing on this.

I have Sirius in my jeep and will be transferring it to my M3 (I opted for life time subscription) in the long run it’s worth it. If in fact Sirius and XM merge then it will truly be unbeatable as far as radio music. I do find Sirius to play a lot of songs over and over and I get really tired of it and for the last 2 months it just seams as though no good new music has come out....But I still find my self listening to it all the time. I think I will be mostly listening to my Iphone and USB cards in the M3 though. At least till I'm sick of my music.

I would get it if I was you ($499 lifetime subscription) and well never worry about it again...

I had Sirius for over 3 years and I love it. I don't listen to the regular FM any more, I enjoyed my 1st free year then paid yearly. My only complaint is about their billing department, they screwed up my bill several times, so last Summer I paid for their lifetime subscription (was on sale for $399) for my BMW and MB S550 and got it over with. Since then, no more billing problems, and I will transfer it to my new M3 coupe. I cannot stand commercials. Sound quality is very good but as mentioned earlier, you may get very infrequent loss of signal under bridges, but it's not a big deal at all. Hope that helps.

when I first config. my car I didn't choose Sirus, I have it @ work and love the many different channels so gave it some thought and plus the free year subscription and decided its @least useful for that first year, if within that year I don't use it much then I won't renew it, but if I ever want it again my car will be equipped with it. I got HD/IPOD/USB/SIRIUS/ENHANCED SOUND....

Here's a question. I did not order the Satellite Radio option. If I want it later, is this something that the dealer can add anytime---or would the entire unit need to be replaced? If the later, I realize I can simply add a receiver. Thanks if anybody knows.

I asked my CA the same question and he said it could not be retrofitted and would be cheaper to just get a reciever...as you probably already know CA's aren't always right but I would imagine that probably the entire radio section would have to be changed out and wiring and such would have to be done =$$ your car started it build right so no adding it now....don't worry its not a life & death option you'll survive w/ ipod and cd's/mp3
