335D owners - remapping !

im about to take my car to be remaped , but before i do take the plunge ( and it is a plunge, as its a very expensive machine to mess with ) i was wondering if i could ask for a quick summary from members who have had their car done , the advantages and disadvantages ( if any ) that they have found ?!

how does it affect the manufacturers warranty ?
is their really a concern about too much stain on the transmission ?

your thoughts would be really appreciated

Chris

What does the SUPERCHIPS warranty offer?

In the extremely unlikely event of a Superchip being responsible for causing damage to your vehicle, Superchips will, under the terms and conditions of our warranty, repair your vehicle.

We arrange for an independent assessor to evaluate the problem and to arrange for the repair of your vehicle quickly and professionally.

The warranty is not intended to replace the existing warranty provided by the manufacturer, but will supplement it to cover the parts deemed to be excluded by the manufacturer. Full terms and conditions are available upon request.

Give Helen (beemerbird), Ian (Hotcoupe) & Tony (Evil Diesel) a PM & they'll convince you, I'm sure.

As others have stated, you can definitely feel the difference after the re-map, and the 335d isn't a slow car to start with. So the main advantage is that the car feels more powerful and more eager. One disadvantage is that you see the traction control light flash a lot more, though this isn't a real problem and you could always go for an LSD to help put the power down (though I'm not sure anyone here has had the LSD fitted to a 335d yet). Another advantage is slightly better mpg.

As for the warranty, I think the jury's still out on that one. Personally, I think we are taking a risk in having the car remapped. If a turbo (or some other engine/transmission part) failed on my car tomorrow, I do wonder if BMW would be able to tell I'd had a remap, and might try to blame that - hopefully not, but there is a doubt, and I suppose that's what stops a fair number of people from taking the plunge. I decided to take the risk, and no problems so far.

BTW, there are a few threads on here about whether you should inform your insurance company, and my view on this is that you should. It's a relatively small price to pay (slight hike on the premium) to keep legal, and if the worst happens and you're involved in a bad accident, then you're insured. I think it's just not worth the risk of voiding your insurance for the sake of saving less than £100 a year.
