OT - Private Reg

I am thinking of buying a private reg from DVLA and was wondering what is the whole process to get it on the car?

My car is already registered as I've had since 2013

Thanks in advance

1) Go to DVLA Website
2) Choose Reg and pay online including retention/transfer fee
3) Wait about 2 weeks for the paperwork
4) Fill in paperwork with details of car you wish to use new reg on.
5) Send Back to DVLA including old V5.
6) Get notice from DVLA you can now use new reg on car about a week a later, including new V5. (Used to get new tax disc but of course not now)
7) Buy new Number plates and affix to car
8) Tell BMW Finance

I put a personal plate on mine about a month after I got the car. Whole process took about 3 weeks.

It's all on the DVLA website:

http://dvlaregistrations.direct.gov....after_purchase

Open the section "How do I apply to put the registration number on a vehicle"

Do i tell the insurance company?

If i don't put it on my car and wait until i get a new car can I retain the plate if i pay whatever they want on the website and just not put it on a car?

When you get the paperwork through saying you can put the number on your car, get a set of plates made up. Tell your insurance company, then put the plates on the car.

Don't do it any other way as if you get stopped, the system will show your car as being uninsured.

The first year retention is included in the price. Thereafter, there is a small fee of £25 a year according to the link I provided earlier.

You only pay the retention fee if it's not been assigned to a car. Once it's on the car it doesn't cost anything. When you buy a new car (and you already own the reg) the reg gets transferred to new car at a cost of £80.

My PP is the only thing I've ever bought to do with a car that's gained value. Bought it about 10 years ago for £599 from a website called Newreg, similar ones are now going for £2500-£3000.

Yes because otherwise the car is uninsured (Incorrect VRM).
Sorry thought that would be obvious

The DVLA fee includes the transfer fee. You have 12 months from time of purchase to assign it to a car. If you dont within this time then you need to pay an annual £80(?) retention fee or lose the plate (and your money)

Just be aware that you're not buying the pp only the right to display. If your car gets stolen or written off the dvla can refuse to re issue and I don't think insurance would cover.

Not sure but don't think so. Think all regs are dvla owned and it's only the right to display that you get. There's even a caveat that if you misrepresent they can take it away from you.

Best to give the dvla a call to double check though as I'm no expert.

Nope. The DVLA can withdraw any plate at any time. We only have the right to display a particular plate on a particular vehicle until they say otherwise. It is after all a government assigned unique identifier in order to ease tracing a vehicle used to commit a crime and not really a monogram. (Although they realised they can make some cash out of making the illusion that it is)

If you want to put whatever you fancy on your car for as long as you want just apply a sticker or paint it on.

I always thought it was £80 a year, but the latest information on the DVLA web site on the link says it's £25 a year.

Isn't it pathetic in this day and age we're still sending bits of paper through the post for this? In any developed country you should be able to buy a number plate and transfer it online.

As an example, my brother in law lives in Switzerland. Everyone is issued a number plate which you keep for as long as you drive. If you buy a new car, you drive in with your trade in, and the dealer transfers your number there and then. They simply log on to align the number plate to the VIN. It takes three minutes, not three weeks.
Also means they don't have to issue number plates for every car. So dealership cars, be it old or new, sit on the forecourt without a number plate.
Far too simple and organised for the UK though.

If I remember correctly, the £80 fee covers a three-year period

I live in Switzerland, and the flipside to the registration number staying with you throughout your life is that it is a legal requirement to carry your original car registration document, original insurance document and original driving license in your car at all times. Great kit for a thief.... And hardly saving on paperwork (come on, it is Switzerland : home of multi-layered beaurocracy).

There is also a desirability for very low numbers here, signifying that you are an old family that has been driving for many, many years. Similar idea to the UK system (vanity plates), to some it is important enough for there to be a market to capitalise off them.

I was looking at the time prior to the 64 plate coming out.

I could have made quite an investment really but didn't think:

ME64 BMW
ME64 BHP

These were both available at £999 (later seen on flea bay for ca. £5k

By the time I was serious all that was left was:

ME64 POO

I tried convincing the wife this would have people think my car was shit hot but she was unconvinced.

Did they actually sell for £5k though? People put values to plates that are sometimes quite far fetched. ME64 BMW seems like one of them as I wouldn't pay anymore than £999 for that plus it's restrictive to a certain model of car. At least your initials look ok on any car.
