Also, check the adjuster arm. It's clips onto the lower control arm on the driver or passenger side. If it comes unclipped it will cause problems with height

I have checked the mechanical arms. they look connected and don't look bent or anything. "auto setting" is this a setting on the Idrive? I just turn the lights knob two clicks to the right.

I can take a picture of the position of the front and rear mechanical arm things if anyone knows what the original position should be.

You should turn it one click to the left

I have just tested and in auto (one click to left) and normal (two clicks right) the xenon do not move up and down on start up.

The xenons always do a self leveling routine after start. The motors have no extra fuse. They (stepper type) can go bad but if both refuse to work it's likely to be a fault of the light module (which is the footwell module on our e9x's but I'm not sure)
Check for codes.

Do the lights turn with the steering wheel when you set them on auto?

not sure if I have the xenon's that go left and right when I steer. the car has recently been on a ramp though having the DPF delete performed.

below is the pictures of the xenon control arms as they sit. could they be in the wrong position?

no faults that relate to lights when I did a code read with a code reader either.

is the front xenon control arm bracket bent?

so after some reading on the net. someone else had a similar issue. the garage had damaged his front sensor causing the xenons to point low. on further inspection is my bracket bent? it looks to be bent towards the centre of the car.

I have attached a picture from the side and below. can anyone confirm if bracket bent and if so what the original position should be. im hoping the bracket should be a right angle.

from the back

and from underneath
