just a heads up, harbor freight has low profile jacks on sale.

i'm going to be taking my wheels off to give them a cleaning and take a look at my brakes.
a trip to my local harbor freight turned up a good score; a 3 ton jack with less than 3" profile on sale. got out the door for $92 and got a free magnetic dish while i was there.

just thought i would share to save you guys a few bucks.

That's a great price, do you know how long it's on sale for?

Not sure, I didn't pay attention. I just knew it was a good deal since I've looked at low profile jacks in the past. It may be online.

Have you tried it yet? Looks like it may not work on the center front jack point. It would be nice if it worked there.

You want the 2 ton low profile. It's lower and longer than the 3 Ton pictured above.

Thanks for the heads up!

And since you'll be removing the wheels, what is the torque number to tighten the lugs and what's the best way to avoid/minimize sheering or scrapping the lugs?

This is the jack I have and it's worked great over the years.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I found this over in the Macht Schnell wheel spacer reference thread (http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=262054):

I have this jack and it works great but I have to use another jack to slightly lift up the front side one first to get to the center jack point. FYI, my car has the comp pack and lowered with RD springs, so the jack will probably work for no modded cars. Also, this price is their "always" sale price, I got the jack for around $80 with their 20% off coupon you see in their ads/flyers.

I like their smaller 1.5 ton compact aluminum jack. It is lighter so it's easy to carry and it goes lower. I had 1 for 10 years before it started leaking oil. I'm on the 2nd one and it is working great so far.

i do have plans on buying a quality torque wrench.

i know there are smaller, 1.5 ton jacks, but the weight rating on those wasn't very impressive. they may be able to work, but i'm not going to risk over working a harbor freight jack. hydraulic jacks can absolutely fail, and i don't want to increase those chances by over working a smaller jack for the sake of convenience.

Look up Arcan jacks. They are the makers of the TireRack jack. I've used both the TireRack jack and the HF, and it's worth the money. HF can't get the height needed, and isn't as quality. I believe you can find them at Costco.

You should never work under a car with a floor jack. I just need it to go up and place jack stands underneath. Also, the 1.5 ton rating is good for just about everything. You aren't placing the entire weight of the car on the floor jack - you just use it on a corner which is a fraction of the weight of the car.

I love the little, lightweight 1.5 ton aluminum HF jacks. Been using them for 10 years. If I had to buy a nice floor jack, I would buy one of those low profile long 2 ton steel jacks. Arcan, HF, Torin and others make them. They go under everything and have a nice reach. But I have a lift now.

i wouldn't, and i would always use jack stands or shores when working under a vehicle, but i still wouldn't want to have a light use harbor freight jack fail when lifting a vehicle.

I would not want to have any jack fail while lifting a vehicle. Have used the HF $59 aluminum 1.5 ton jacks for 10 years and never had one fail. Never had a jack fail by releasing unexpectedly. Have had jacks fail by not lifting in the first place or by not lifting past a certain height, but those were not HF jacks.

I agree with not going under a car supported only by jacks. Buy some ramps or jackstands and know how to use them properly.

2 years ago I had an aluminum HF 1.5T fail while lifting the car at the track. It didn't fall straight down, it bent sideways and ended up getting caught under. Flat surface btw. Worse, I had 2 jack stands ready & lined up next to the car and 1 of them ended up scraping the side skirt pretty badly.

Since then I've been bringing my HF 2T low-profile with me instead of leaving it home. Only downside is that it's pretty heavy. Just not worth the risk.

If it bent sideways, the car moved on it. I had the happen once. Totally my fault.

I have the long-nose low profile jack which easily slip from the front under the jack point. Then follow it up with jack stands on either sides to do oil changes and other maintenance. Had imported into Australia for under $300 air freight about six years ago. It was a great deal at the time

The Arcan 2 ton jack looks like it is the longest reach lowest profile, and goes for about $219 here in the US. It would probably be my choice if I was in the market.

The HF deals come up often. Just subscribe to their email or something. I bought mine for $90 shipped a couple of years ago and has been great.

I'm sure the person delivering it to my door step must have been cussing the entire time. It's definitely not light.

P.S. For my lowered E92m I drive the car on 1 2x4 on one side of the car, and 2 2x2 stacked on top of each other. Kind of a pain to do, but never had any issues.

Really? My car is/was slammed on 18s and never needed anything to fit that jack under. It's already very low. My car is also tucking the front tire pretty good. Your car must be one of those stanced cars, lol
