Car was off but fans keep going for a while?

I drove my car today, finally for an entire day, and noticed that when I brought her back home and turned her off the fans kept blowing and making noise by the front hood - and I think it smelled like burned rubber or smoke? I could be incredibly insane but this was the first time I noticed the car continuing to make a sound even when it's off.

Is this normal? Do the fans continue to blow for a little while after the car is off? Apologies for the silly question but I have to know because I freaked out for a short bit after exiting the car.

its normal! Don't be afraid to push the car a little!! If you push it from the beginning, it won't smell like that down the road. Also the fans are on to help cool the engine down a little and keep the oil moving. It goes away later, not a issue at all!

Completely normal. You are good. That will happen more frequently as you push the F8x. Have fun and be safe after break in.

The fans are running to cool the turbos down (not the engine). The turbos have their own separate cooling circuit that is fed by an electrical pump that can also continue to run in conjunction with the fan when the engine is shut down.

Yeap, this is correct. My Evo, and old MS3 did the same. All turbo cars. Back in the day they used to say you had to wait 2-3 minutes after you parked to let the turbos cool down or install a timer to keep the fans and oil moving to prevent glazing or burning oil over the turbos. Then automakers installed the timers themselves, just like your M.
Personally, if I've been thrashing around a bit I give the car a few minutes to cool down, by driving at parking lot pace the last block of my home and waiting a minute or so to turn it off once parked, gives the turbos an extra measure of cooling time(I'm just paranoid like that).

Blksnowflake...I don't think your "paranoid" at all. My first turbo (81 Saab) fried it's turbo after 30K miles from a bad bearing attributed to lack of cool down (it carboned up). After that I installed a kit that ran a 1Qt. of oil over the turbo bearing when the engine was turned off...ran that car for another 110k and never replaced another turbo.

Had this same problem now I know but about 2 months later after that it sounded like the fan died out or something everytime I get out of car now it’s just buzzing noise not a fan no more, I have not been to concerned but I drove it hard tonight and after a hard drive on the way home about 5 miles out I smelt strong gasoline or a smoke smell mixed with oil or sosmething driving with the windows down and up I was supprised I put it in efficient and drove home in automatic got home and and turned car off and it was buzzing behinds the two front headlights and smelt like gasoline and oil under the hood and a bit of a burnt smell and it was ticking like dripping oil or something under hood I got a video. Could this be a faulty fan and it’s burning my turbos to death? It was hot enough to kick fan on after for sure but it was 35 defrees when I was doing all this and engine was up to temp. I drove in sport not sport plus all night car has 43k miles DCT 2015.

Does anyone know what this is or what I need to do my car is due for service oil change and check was due in August but Bmw argued with me and said no maintance till the miles are up for the service. Brake fluid flush for January 1st also

sorry to come up again with this thread but is better than opening a new one.
Im from Portugal and i've just made a 15km drive in efficient mode.No hard pushes, nothing. cruising at avg of 80km/h. It's 5º outside and i had the AC on all the drive.
Has i stop the car in the garage, he stays with the fan on for some minutes. Is this normal?
Thank you in advance

Parked your girl in the garage, she might cool herself off for a while.

Love it when the fans kick on. That's how you know you gave it the beans. I did a steady 165mph on the A9 for a hot minute the other day chasing a Porsche. Felt good. Fans working over time.

F8X is a very well engineered vehicle - built for durability to handle the most rigorous conditions lap after lap, canyon to canyon, autobahn for miles and more miles.

Albert Biermann's tech shop on yt highlights all the motorsport nous blooded into the breed. The F8X was Mr Biermann's finale before his eventual recruitment and hiring by Hyundai-Kia. Most recently at Hyundai as head of R&D, he qb'ed the development of the Veloster N, R&T's 2020 perf coty.

Another video highlighting how the S55 was built to be battle-ready starting at 4:44 (pay no mind to the crank hub fail part lmao)
