First time experiencing reduced power/limp mode. Cold?
I left my car at a sams club yesterday because I was taking a day trip to Atlanta and I rode with someone else. When we got back it was about 8° and windy. My 335i started right up but began to cough and sputter and the idle started shooting back and forth between 500-1500 Rpms. Touching the gas pedal did nothing. Turned it off and started it up again and it did the same thing. Had the reduced power warning on the dash as well as the SES light. I let it run for about 2-3 minutes then restarted and it ran perfectly. Drove it home without an issue and as of this morning it's fine still. Any idea what this could be? I'm hoping not injectors but I have 134k and I believe they're original. HPFP is the newest one but its never had any injector problems and last time I had it in the shop they confirmed that the injectors are the old style. Let me know what you think!

Pull the codes from a code reader, preferrably a BMW specific one that can read DME (?) codes.
Likely the spark plugs/coils. How long have the current ones been in there? |

I sure hope that's all it is! I'll have it scanned. I have been having another issue sometimes that feels like an ignition related issue. Stutters pretty hard under hard acceleration at lower Rpms. High boost at below 3500 Rpms makes a shaking that feels like coils until I downshift. I've been putting that off for a little while and kinda forgot about it because it ran great otherwise.

Gut feeling tells me it could be sparks or coil. I had the same issue. I had to replace a coil. |

Dang lol. Still need to scan the codes, just have been super busy and the problem hasn't come back. SES light is on but it's running great now.

shooting back and forth at 500-1500 rpms is much to fast, friction and all that, your idle will continue to sputter, but if you touch the gas pedal just right, it will clear those injectors. And don't worry 2 - 3 mins is average but many last longer. what were we talking about again. |

I think with such a high mileage 335 you need to run through that thing and make it yours.
If you don't know the status of all the fluids, belt/tensioners and plugs/coils you need to make that right.
