My M4 got scratched, what should I do?

I have posted this also on my car thread, I am posting it here, too, hoping that you guys from my area can help me with a better idea on how to handle this.

Unfortunately this car is not idiot proof so I have already got a damage on it last Saturday night. I was trying to make a U turn in a very slow moving traffic at a traffic light in Houston and a "smart" driver of a company rented Suburban thought he had enough space between me and the rest of the drivers to make a left there so he hit my rear bumper... I was looking in my mirrors and just saying "don't do that" until I felt how he hit my back...

My question now is how I should deal with this... I got 2 estimates from BMW, one of $661 and another one of $636 but the problem is that it will probably go on my Carfax, although I am leasing but... one of the body shops said that they are going to repaint only that area, the other one said that they will repaint the whole bumper.

I also have another solution, going to Vive Auto Detailing in Houston for a touch up paint but they said that since there aren't any chips in the rear bumper it won't turn out to be perfect because the paint doesn't have any wholes where to go in...they also said that on some cars they make it 100% perfect and on some other ones they don't... they quoted me $75 for that...

I can do that $75 job and if I am not happy I can scratch it back and use the guy's insurance or leave it just like that after the touch up paint and leave with it like that because I can't stand the idea to repaint the whole bumper for a small sh*t like that...

I wonder how much does a rear bumper cost, I have been trying to search for a price but I wasn't able to find one... because I could just get another bumper and paint it rather than repainting a barely scratched one.

I keep thinking how to solve this because it is just like a knife in my head, damn thing, I put the clear bra on the front to be road proof but I did not think about the rear of the car to be idiot proof, too. It's been a few days since my good night sleep is gone.

CiprianS, that does suck however it really doesnt look bad. I would throw some touch up paint on it and move on. Trust me this wont be the first or the last scratch you get on your M4. Painting the whole bumper you run the risk of the color not matching or the paint flaking in a couple years if not properly applied. Little touch up paint and no one will notice without looking hard.

If it's leased, who cares if it is on Carfax? You are going to give the car back regardless so it won't have any impact.

Second, why isn't the guy that hit you paying for this? If his insurance (or him) is paying then I'd get it fixed the right way. Regardless, you will definitely notice the touch up paint and BMW will likely either charge you or make you fix it on lease return anyway so I would just get it corrected the right way. That's just my view.

Friend had a similar sized scratch on his new IS350. Local bodyshop did an amazing job resolving it ---- granted it was black, maybe easier to blend than silver?

I don't want to repaint the whole bumper for a small thing like that, I will just try my luck tomorrow with the touch up paint, if it turns out to be ok I will stay with it like that and live with it, otherwise I will think about some other options. Now I am just asking myself why the hell didn't I put a clear bra on the rear bumper, too.

Go to Richey Collision and talk to them. Had a similar issue with my week old A6 last year. They had to repaint a small area to get it right. Nobody else in Houston I would trust personally.

I went today with the car at Vive Detailing, I am still in shock, the car looks awful after the touch up paint, I think that I would have repainted it myself it would have looked better. I want to grab something to eat and I will go back to them, and make a big noise out of this. So whenever you have touch up paint jobs to do, avoid Anson's shop, Vive, they suck big time.

I will have to go with the guy's insurance and repaint all of the bumper because right now my back bumper looks blue instead of my Silverstone... it is just awful.

I don't think it really matters if it reflects on carfax since it's a lease. Remember carfax is for the car and not on the driver. So there's nothing to worry about. And like what others said, a touch up probably would do the trick.

Read my previous post, a touch-up has just made it look worse.

You could have done it yourself with a tooth pick. Never use the brush provided. Remember, if it is that big that a toothpick is not enough, then you would be better off repainting the entire panel or bumper in this case.

That's weird. I'm sure a good bodyshop could have made it look like nothing ever happened.

It looks awful... I told the other driver to start the claim on his insurance, I am waiting until Monday to call his insurance again to have the file processed until then.

I hope it does not go on my insurance record if I am using his insurance, right? Also, will I get a rental car while my car is in the body shop?

If he's at fault it won't impact your record. Whether you get a rental or not is dependent on the policy. Your best bet is to talk to the insurance company who will actually know the answers.

This may be a completely irrelevant, but I wonder what the insurance adjuster will think given the attempted fix? What I mean is the car was damaged and then the fix was attempted. If it were me, I might worry that it will make the claim/adjuster process more difficult given they can't see the original damage and might argue (wrongfully) that it would impact the cost of the true repair. I might be completely out to lunch on this but insurance companies can be tricky and trying the quick repair first might give them ammunition to make life more difficult. Just something to be prepared for if they raise it... which they shouldn't.

I have thought about that, too... I have the pictures from when the car was without the touch up paint on it, also I have the repair estimates that I got before... should I just get rid of the touch up paint with a polish? It is on the surface anyway, I think even my grandma could have attempted to fix it better than Vive Auto Detailing in Houston.

I would leave it as is... sounds like you have lots of supporting info regardless

Imagine that some people from Houston also recommend this guy that has the detail garage, Anson. Whatever, $75 wasted, they said to go again in 2 days if it is not better and they will do it again.

It's a car, it's a car, it's a car. You are going to get stone chips, dings and scratches. This is tiny. Sorry about the bumper and I don't look forward to my first ding but I am not going to lose sleep over it. Just a car, just a car.... that should be the mantra here.

Any advice is a good advice, I should have followed your advice from the beginning and not mess with this detailing shit called touch up paint, my car looks awful right now and I will have a very bad show with the adjuster, too....

Yeah if you want to fix it, do it right. Obviously you really care about the car, and if you have to worry about carfax/insurance/more cost... maybe you shouldn't have gotten the M4. Everything you do for it is meant to be EXPENSIVE.

Vive...I will just go to them on Monday and tell them to remove their paint and I never want to hear anything about them again. If that piece of shit called touch up paint is what they do, then I don want to hear about them ever.
