330d cold start problem help!

Hi guys wondering if anyone could advise on a problem i am having with my 2009 LCI 330D 38000 miles on the clock

I have owned the car for little over a month and after having it for around a week i started having cold start problems with a lumpy idle, car was taken to the garage and they checked the glow plugs which were fine but found a problem code with the glow plug control which they changed for a new one.

I have now started having the same lumpy idle on cold start again and its only been a week or two since the control unit was changed. Anyone else had this experience? should i clean the EGR or could it be the swirl flaps i have heard people mention??

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Used to happen on my car too (330d LCI) but stopped doing it a few months back.

What fuel do you use?

I used to use V-power but now I just use standard diesel and it feels like this choice in fuel has possibly stopped the mentioned issue.

I find the fuel I use has big effects on my 330d (although an early pre-lci 231hp) it only seems to like BP ultimate and drives like shit with anything else, especially Tesco fuel - so my club card is now redundant LOL!!!

I have tried various types of fuel but neither has made any difference!

Have your codes checked again and see if your new controller is faulty

Mine has a lumpy idle now and then from cold lasts around 10 seconds or clears if you rev the car 2010 Lci 330d.
I use shell v power its unburnt diesel for sure as you can smell it but the car starts instantly just put a tank of standard fuel in see how that goes.

I would suggest coming off V-power and using the standard Shell diesel for a couple of tanks. I know you said that you have tried different fuels but it does take a good couple of tanks to get rid of the previous fuel. Usually I'm the type to recommend using premium fuel options (my petrol cars only use Shell V-power unleaded) but this was the only change that I made which cured the issue of the lumpy idle described in this thread. It now starts beautifully and smoothly.

I haven't noticed lumpy idle since summer time which is roughly when I stopped using Shell V-power diesel. Could just be luck, or something else that has changed, but it hasn't happened for months now and I'll be staying away from Shell V-power diesel in this car.

Could be one of a few things. Last thing they changed on mine was glow plug leads (HT Leads?) but I've not had chance to fully test yet to see if its resolved the issue.

Was done under a warranty but i think the part was between £200-300 and a good days labour as the intake manifold has to come off etc

They must have done a lot more work if it took all day, to change swirl flap actuator is an easy job, on my 330d I can remove the manifold in 40 minutes.

I left it with them for the day so i have no idea how long it took them, plus it was done under the warranty so didnt cost me a penny
