Garage List
Box...

So...

After seeing a DTUK CRD-T box for sale on the big bay of e I decided to have a quick search first to gain the knowledge from other owners on here...

After reading through 3 or so threads and about 100 posts (many removed since a banning so it didn't all make sense!) the conclusion I've come to - I think - is that basically a tuning box ISN'T worth it???

Risk of engine trouble and then risk of non coverage under warranty?

So, at risk of turning this into a thread like previous ones; please let's try not to; are they worth it?

Has anyone got one? If so what brand, is it great/mediocre/poor?

Anyone HAD one, took it off? Why?

And finally - and riskily - anyone had specific problems such as engine probs/limp modes or anyone had an issue with BMW following engine probs?

Cheers

Also for note I have the 163bhp 320d ED. The box promises an increase upto 210bhp and +100nM torque... Sounds tempting, hence my initial search and this resulting question thread ;-)

I posted this in another thread but I had an E90 330d and I fitted a DTUK red tuning box. Under acceleration the car vibrated heavily the box had several settings and it was the same in all. When removed it went back to normal. I sold it after two weeks. Trip computer was innacurate too with it fitted.

Are they worth it? No! Definately not. you couldn't pay me to fit one now.

Not all the boxes are the same so the question is like asking "are cars any good?".
What ACS, steinbauer and Hartge offer is in effect a very sophisticated tuning box. But they out a lot more development in to the hardware and also to ensuring the settings are correct for the cars they are being sold, compared to the cheaper options.

People tend to forget that the prices from the likes of ACS include a lot of testing and assurance.

With 'cheaper' stuff, invariably testing is limited either in scope or time.

I see that all the time with stuff we use, so much so will pay extra for peace of mind and not having the hassle factor at a later date when things go Pete Tong.

I run a DTUK box on my 320D with some good results for a while. In end had an offer of the official permance pack for a price I could not say no. So sold the box to a friend who run it on his 520D until a mechanic broke it when moving the cables during a service. Let the cables drop down and they melted on the turbo. Overall a good experience and did give the car the bump it needed in the power.

And warrant the engine against any tuning-related faults in the case of ACS.

I've taken three phone calls this week already from people who have returned "other" brand tuning boxes due to engine warning lights, limp mode and other undesirable side-effects. You get what you pay for. It's up to you if it's Hugo Boss or George by Asda.

My opinion is the DTUK is the best box of this type you can buy. However a propepr remap or different ECU (a la ACS) is the best way to go.

I had one on my 2012 320d, and it did deliver a performance boost. But I never felt "safe" so took it off.

I believe Hugo Boss was a renowned Nazi who made uniforms for the SS. George by Asda is only guilty of crimes against fashion!

Indeed JD6.

It's only recently that they apologised.

But then, there are many German firms that would rather forget that part of their past....

Lots of companies, German and otherwise, are guilty of that.

Not ACS though, we're angels
