Tuning box ordered for f31 335d - should i fit it?
i have just ordered a 'diesel tuning uk' crd-t+ multi channel fuel and boost plug in box. I know this is a crude alternative to proper acs style remap but living in scotland i just don't see how i can get my car to southampton to get the work done and repeatedly so after each service. It woukdbeeven better if bmw offered an official ppk for the 335d but the chances of that look slim to none. I plan to inform my insurance company before fitting it. Would like to hear thoughts as even though i have bought it i haven't plugged it in yet so still time to rethink - unleash the beast's true potential vs bastardising a beautifully refined and balanced vehicle....help!

I've read a lot of nightmare stories about those DTUK boxes, particularly in relation to Fx series cars. I had one on my E90 330d and the car developed a nasty vibration under hard acceleration which disappeared when the box was removed. They are local to me too and they couldn't advise
If you Google around you'll no doubt find more info. |

AFAIK, all these tuning boxes work by fooling the ECU with skewed sensor data. Given how complex the whole engine management topic is, I'd be very wary about this approach. How well tested are these things? Do the developers really understand the consequences of what the sensor changes are doing?, in all circumstances?

I have a DTUK box on my car and it is running fine. TBH there is too much choice, 3 maps and 6 settings per map so it takes a bit of fiddling to get a setting you like, for me anyway as I keep changing and thinking one is better than the other! There is certainly more power than standard, as you'd hope, I'm not running the most agressive settings but it is much more usable in everyday mode, I usually tend to keep it in comfort and just use the stick to switch between sport shift mode.

ACS certainly doesn't - it's no different to standard and pretty accurate (going on mileage I get out of a tank).

You having nothing to loose really, if there is an issue you can just remove the box.
I tried one before on a Mercedes CLS350 and it kept sending the car into limp mode but other people are very happy with them. |

Try it! What's the worst that can happen? And if it does then remove it...
Of these options I was looking at superchips, whom use an ECU, and also Racechip, who are a German company. They are all simpler versions of what steinbauer and ACS and Hartge do.

I had one on my LCI E92 320d.
It was "OK", definitely faster. I never felt happy or safe with it though, so ended up taking it off and selling it. The bigger issue is the fact that the 335d always feels like it needs MORE power....

I would imagine if they have got tuv certification then this would indicate that the product does what it says it should on the box and shouldn't damage any ancillary components. I believe some self tuning boxes are tuv approved whereas others aren't.
The other point to check would be with the end user adjustable boxes is it only the initial setting that's tuv approved or all the settings that one can adjust at home. If memory serves me right some of dtuk boxes are but other ranges are not. Worth asking the question Last edited by Kal101; 11-24-2014 at 02:47 PM.. Reason: missed out shouldn't. Oops |

What happens to the digital Power and torque dials when you up the power in the car from stock?
Do they get Re calibrated or do the needles just go around to the maximum values already on the dials which would not be accurate? Just wondering.

In terms of what's the worst that can happen, Lorcan's photo shows the risk of applying a tuning box which is designed to trick your engine management system by interfering with the sensor signals being returned. And presumably if you remove it, the dealer computer will still detect sensor readings stored that are out of normal parameters. And you have voided your warranty. Game over!

I used a DTUK one on a previous car and it was good and I didn't have any issues with the engine. Was definitely noticeably faster (I think I got it rolling roared with an extra 50bhp and no noticeable issues on the rolling road with fuelling etc)
Tempted to do it once my 335d is run in. I say do it in yours and let us know Im sure the guy who ran DTUK was on this forum for a bit with a remapped white 335d? |

Anyway, for those that have had a remap (ie permanent ) power upgrade would definatly NOT want the dials to be reading the correct (higher) power output - for obvious reasons - servicing etc..... The dealer will know the real higher power output!

Have been in touch with dms who have offered me a tengocity job without me having to make the trip to southampton. That was the key issue holding me back from doing the just thing. They have suggested i disconnect the ecu and courier it down to them for the remap. After that they will send an engineer out for free unlimited times to reset after services etc if engines resets to standard. I will sleep on it but think it the best option. More than twice the price but these guys know what they are doing, and do a bespoke job. I think i owe it to the 5 to do the decent thing. Will decide tomorrow.
