Who has had a major engine or drivetrain fault with their F30 and was it a 328i?

Another thread had me thinking that there has been relatively few major issues with engines, gearboxes etc on the F30, and in my recollection, all that ones that I can think of were with 328i cars.

I just wondered if I had selective memory or it is indeed the case that the diesels are remarkably trouble free, or conversely that these newer 4 cylinder petrol turbos are a little less reliable?

I maybe should have asked this before I did the remap!

Replacement gearbox at 5k miles on my 335i 6MT due to rattle/vibration that started at around 3k miles and was gradually getting worse. According to BMW it only affects 335i 6MT gearboxes and is a known issue.

Pick up my 328i next week so hope your speculation is just that!
I follow the forums pretty closely and the only recent BMW engine that I can recall getting significant bad press was the 335i in the E9x series. High pressure jet issues I believe.
Having said that I had to get quite a bit done on my E90 335d recently - turbo vacuum hoses replaced, ABS module fail. Swirl flaps are also known to fail and get ingested by the engine - disaster with a big 'D' as engine is totalled. Thanks to my dealer and goodwill my expense was limited...on a 7 year old car at that!

The E46 swirl flaps in diesels were an issue that always raised it's head, and on the E90 it was more the 335i petrol that I kept hearing about. Really didn't hear too many issues with the diesels.

auto boxes seem to have been pretty solid too, and can't recall any issues with the new ZF boxes, compared to the manuals?

No problems here.

However....

I just read a thread on a German forum about tuned 335ds, going up in a deathly ball of fire on the autobahn.....

In further news, police report that 335d's are being cruelly targeted by thieves seeking spare tractor parts...

Yeah, they'll look at the exhausts and think it's probably a 328i and thus not worth bothering about

From memory, RobUK had problems with his auto box (and pretty much everything else), and I think there's been a couple of people with excessively whiny auto boxes in reverse.

I think he was the other person with a 328 I was thinking of. Thought he had a manual though.
