wheel nut torque
140nm or something wasn't it?
Winter wheels day today Garage tidied. Got me new trolley jack, got me rubber pad thing, got me torque wrench, got me virgin stack of alloys with winters on (bought in Nov 2013!) - can't remember how tight my nuts should be. Anyone know? Andy

Converted to NM around 120 but some posts say up to 140nm.

Hmmm, when I asked my dealer they advised 110-120Nm... I was going to set 115Nm given the 3% accuracy of most torque wrenches...
But, I may have to reconsider this...

When you asked at dealers was it with a mechanic or bloke on desk / sales person etc?
It's 140nm for the Fx cars. Admittedly it would be great if their website included stuff like this. |

I may set my wrench to increasing settings from 110Nm up and see at what point it actually does anything. See what they are at post factory and PDI torquing only.

I doubt most folk will calibrate domestic torque wrenches. I can't think of a means without buying specific kit. So, initial calibration only. 3% claim.
With biannual use I can't see it drifting too quickly.

It's just a case of measuring length in inches of the torque wrench to your hand hold point and muliplying by say 10 lbs weight hanging off emd measurement. Pop it into a vice and adjust it see when it cracks. Or something like that lol. Alternatively I take it to dealer or friendly garage and have it checked |

And coincidentally I was in the exact same boat as the OP <12hrs ago. Google confirmed M14 bolts = 140Nm. Torqued 'em to that last night, no issues at all. |

Therefore why not tighten to the correct torque? Seems crazy not to or should we just start guessing tyre pressures and oil types too..? |

Grease them up and still jump on the brace...
I had to intervene when I saw a tyre fitter misusing a torque wrench on a set of wheels. I could not believe what I saw, he was using it correctly, it clicked off... then he loaded it some more... He just looked glazed when I tried to explain he had over tightened the bolts and ruined the accuracy of his torque wrench as well. The other thing that makes me cringe is seeing guys using a torque wrench as a breaker bar... to undo nuts or bolts. Both these misuses take a torque wrench off accurate calibration faster than anything. HighlandPete |
