Cool Climate Timer in idrive menu

Rubbish! Set to 5:15 to de-ice and warm up the car and it just blows cold air about. What's the point of that! Or am I doing something wrong? Salesman told me it makes it toasty warm and clear windows etc... Think he was having me on

My understanding is that unless you have the diesel fired heater then it has nothing with which to heat the air.

And that was something that never made the options list in the UK.

Yeah, you were lied to. Not a UK option. The BMW screen covers were always excellent for frost prevention, and nothing warms the car quicker than driving it.

Think it's a legality, I'm sure it works by actually starting the engine. In the UK it's illegal to have a car start unattended....something like that?

No, its for use with a diesel heater which is not related to the engine but was never offered on the 3 series in the UK. It was an option on the early X5's though.

Did/do Range Rovers have a paraffin version?

Getting in the car this morning a feature like that would be a real treat.

Yeah you can get a Webasto heater on Range Rovers that burns a bit of diesel.

We've got it on the Disco (and had it on our old Rangie and X5 V8). Can either set the timer or press the remote from the comfort of your bed.

Do get rather jealous of the wife as I wait for my car to clear (at least I have a heated steering wheel to cling to!).

You are correct in that it's an offence to leave the engine running on a vehicle with no-one in it. It's called 'quitting'.

Alternatively it could be Entrapment, leaving a bmw with engine running

Although I admit I have got out of car, locked it and nearly walked away and noticed engine running...

It's helpful on hot days, but it's not the equivalent of the EV pre-conditioning which I am jealous of into my very bones

Nope, that's for the summer to blow ambient air through the car and cool it. You need the Webasto heater unit, which can be fitted by your dealer around £1,200 to some models.... Or if you have some earlier X5s, it's fitted to the car, as the diesel engine took too long to warm the car, so was used to supplement the car's heating when it was really cold. Usually lives in the nearside wheel arch and burns fuel to do it. The aux heating function was an option using that unit.

The recirc button on my 08 E92 was a wonderful feature, I assume it was just a fan that brought hot air from the engine back into the cabin for a period of time when the engine was turned off. Was a lifesaver sometimes when sitting in the car waiting for the missus....

Then they got rid of it on the E9x LCI and replaced it with an All button to keep each temp sync'd. Maybe people didn't want it as they don't have the Rest button on the F3x either.
