Wheel bolt torque settings?

Anyone know the "official" wheel bolt torque settings per BMW? I'd like to torque them properly after changing pads. Thanks.

No I didn't but it has been posted on this forum in a couple of times. I can't seem to quickly find the link.

Edit... found the link. Info is in the 2nd post - http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...eel+lug+torque

The difference is due to the F-chassis BMWs using a larger lug shank (14mm vs 12mm).

All F-Chassis use the 105ft-lb torque spec, spacers or without spacers. Previous E9X models have a 12mm shank, which use the 88ft-lb spec.

Hope this helps!

Many thanks for the explanation. Time for a bigger torque wrench!

I just confirmed with my BMW center Service Manager, via his M Technician, that the F8X lug bolt torque is 140Nm (103.26 lb/ft).

Thanks for helping flesh this out, everyone!

Extremely helpful. Here is why I turned to the board for this question:

First answer from my dealer's service department to this question was: "just hand tight, don't use an air wrench". When I explained I was looking for a number (!), they came back and said I would have to bring my car in "because each car model is different".

Needless to say, I found that ridiculous. So I called my sales guy and asked him if we would find out. He called back and told me it was definitely 80 ft. lbs. Not wanting any more BS answers, I turned to the guys who know. I should have asked you first...

Thanks!

That's the bolt head.

The F80 uses 14mm x 1.25 pitch bolts, with a 17mm thread.

Hey Tom. After how many miles would you suggest to re-torque the bolts?

Always a good idea to recheck at 100mi.

This may or may not be the case (the reason for the change). My '12 ML has 14mm lugs and uses 88 lb-ft torque.

I just drove 2000 miles on my winter wheels torqued to ~85-90 lb/ft. When I went to re-torque them this morning to 105 lb/ft, I literally got no movement on the vast majority of the bolts before my torque wrench clicked over.

Just wanted to share this for those who may be concerned if they under-torqued the wheel.

Thanks for the help identifying the torque requirement. Seems ridiculous that BMW would not include this information in the owners manual........like they have in the past.

Further evidence: this is from a set of OEM wheel locks. M14=140nm

Correct Torque is........

If you want to be accurate (not considering the accuracy of your torque wrench) 140nm is 103.25870089878 pounds. 120 nm is 88.50745791324. So rounding to the nearest pound, it would be 103 and 89 respectively. Incidentally, how many have had your torque wrenches recertified after 5 or 10 years of careful handling or 2 years of throwing it in the tool box.

Damnit.... I have been using 89 lbs/ft on my x3 f25 without any problems for years.... on my F80, since new i have been having wheel balancing issues. Last night i finally got tired and decided to try something myself... Unmounted the wheel and noticed right away that the wheel was over torqued. Cleaned the hubs and refitted the wheels and torqued the wheels slowly. Torque the wheels at 89 ft/lbs. Test drove it last night and after a year and half i can finally say it is butter smooth... Decided to ask the question on Google as far as the torque spec on the f80 and i find myself reading this thread. Damnit my torque is way off.... Hope i do not lose the smoothness of the car when re torquing.
