First Service Done.... plus TSB

Took my m4 to Mt View today for first service (1550 miles)

Drop at 8.45a and pick up at 4pm.

- Car Wash
- Engine oil
- Diff oil
- TSB campaign 10061130400 - CAN Terminator

So interesting side note... When the lot boy was retrieving my car it sounded loud, similar to cold start in the morning. I jumped in and drove away but the car exhaust note continues to be louder than before. The car is a tad peppier than before as well (not like it was lacking). At first I thought I was dreaming it but then I picked up my girl friend and she said spontaneously that it was louder so it's not just my mind going.

Any ideas why the exhaust note would change? Valves stuck open suddenly. secret software flash? I wasn't told about.

Also I previously tried to use launch control (before service) but I could never get it to come up. I mentioned to the service writer but there was nothing they did supposedly to enable it - he said it's there and implied I may have not done it right.

They didn't recall the OE exhaust and replace with MPE did they? Because that would be awesome. I kid of course, but......

Weird. Your recall number doesn't come up on http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/SearchResults -- that's where I'd expect to see more info. No other standard service stuff should have any effect on the exhaust. Check with your dealer and keep us posted.

could be your exhaust has broken in....if that makes sense usually it takes time for an exhaust to break in and it does sound louder with a few miles on it........or the turned up the speakers in the car :P

I doubt it broke in more from the morning to the afternoon

The sound increase is from outside the car. I'm not complaining but it's interesting.

I'll post a photo in the top of the thread of the service order for the CAN recall.

Launch Control only works after they program it in, after the 1st service.

I specified to program launch control in my service request. I would have expected to see a line item on work order for it. It did not have it.

I will test for it again today to see if it's working. They did reset my service interval... apparently I have break in maintenance due in 1200 miles LOLz

They have to use their full diagnostic equipment to reset the break in service indicator, otherwise you'll see another break in maintenance due in 1200 miles listed in your iDrive. And the Launch Control is not active until that is done. They did not follow the proper procedure to reset the indicator. (This happened to me also) Given that they didn't read the F8x break in service procedure, hopefully they also changed your oil drain plug AND the two differential drain plugs, as they're supposed to be replaced each time they are opened up.

My car it's at the dealer as we speak, yes there it's an sib on the car.

I ask a friend that happens to be a master mechanic at the dealer what this was he's answer: its called a terminal resistor It was just not installed at the factory On a short production run of cars its there to protect from over-voltage

So, it is not a recall after all, just a service bulletin. Thanks.

Spoke to our friend in service and looks like it's nothing serious. Apparently some 4-series are missing a particular CAN terminator resistor and are causing false electrical faults in the DME.

Recall and TSB have different connotations that's all.

Glad you got it done AND glad it's not me only that noticed the sound change. If you're DCT you may also find the shifting has improved - S2 quicker and smoother, S3 less jerky / smoother. This little part must have been a bigger deal than I was led to believe.

Update:

Had the service reminder corrected and Launch Control is confirmed Best to use comfort on shocks for launch keeps wheel spin/chirp down.

Spoke to BMW more about the CAN terminator and it's a big deal to the cars affected. My M4 is dramatically improved post install. Also confirmed the sound change as an effect of this update. Obviously if you car is not one of the campaign cars you've already had the better sound and driving. Lucky you.

"Campaign" cars are VINs affected with this particular parts replace campaign.

My production date is 6/17 so if the parts are in the field I would guess your's is not affected. Only way to know is look at the bulletin and see if you VIN range is is listed.
