Pre LCI (07 335i)...auto

Ok,

So I have been searching here and there. I am on week 2 of being a 07 335i owner. I am loving the car. Most of my cars that I use to play with are manual. My Z06 is a 6spd manual. The car before it was manual, and so on. I drove a manual 07 in black, but then drove my crimson red 07 with auto steptronic with paddles on the steering wheel and chose it. One reason being the wife would be able to take it out with her and the baby when need be as well.

With that said, can someone point me to some threads about the auto / paddles and how to use them in the 07? I know it is not a dual clutch trans like the SMG paddleshifts...but I want to know more about what I have in my car and how it operates.

I kind of played with it this morning for a moment, but usually I just have been leaving the car in D and just driving back and forth to work.

I moved the stick over to the left where it says m/s and paddled up to 3rd gear and just let it have it. The auto never changed its gear. How long will it stay? Will it stay to revline? At that point, will it autoshift for me, unless I do it first? I have seen mention of just regular drive Mode (D)...a DS and Manual mode? So are there 3 modes or am I missing something?

I also know you can shift up and down by the gear lever as well. What all else do I need to know? Sorry I know this has probably been discussed many times, but I cuoldnt find the exact info I was looking for.

just leave it in DS and you will see the difference. Night and day with D. In DS you do not have to do anything. I drive in DS 95% of the time. When I really want to make a point to someone I use the tiptronic

There are 3 modes if it is anything like the LCI. Also the car should automatically shift if you have it in M and don't change the gears.

If you are in DS mode, and you push/pull your paddles, it should change to 'M' manual mode and show you the gear that it is in, in the cluster. if you up or down shift it should change pretty quickly. if it's not changing gears when you use the paddles, what happens if you push/pull the shift lever in the console? that should also perform the same function.

If you are in D mode, and you push/pull your paddles, it should change to 'M' manual mode temporarily and allow you to manually swap gears for passing etc. if you don't touch the paddles again, it will automatically return back to D mode after maybe...10 seconds?

Downshifts - ours is pretty quick to downshift assuming the RPMs aren't too high. ours will auto downshift if the RPMs get too low. So if i'm in 4th and come to a stoplight, it'll auto downshift to 2nd by the time i'm at around 1k RPM.

Upshifts - ours will stay in gear until almost redline, honestly i've always shifted when it got close so i'm not sure if it will keep it there or auto upshift.

Starts - it will always default to starting in M2 in 'M' mode. You can downshift when at a stop, to M1, you can also downshift when moving, to M1 but the RPM difference is huge so...be prepared

yeah, i have noticed it wont ever drop down in first gear on its own. What is the reason for this?

What is the harm of driving around all the time in DS instead of just D? Since I just cruise back and forth to work I usually leave in D, but the car like others have said is a little sluggish sometimes in just regular D.

Not sure on the reasoning other than 2nd gear starts are probably more efficient and just as effective in everyday driving? Just grasping here...I'm sure someone else has the real reasons.

As far as driving in DS all the time , not sure there is any harm...other than your bank account balance getting smaller because of the hit in MPG I drive our e91 in DS or M mode pretty much exclusively.

ok...so I played with it some...not much. Still getting used to the car and how everything and all these electronics operate.

With that said, I have seen people mention an Alpina Flash for the auto trans. Is this recommended? Have many people does this? What is the harm long term as it doesnt look like its been available much over a year.

we are under 3 hours response time today....LOL

I have a 07 335i Sedan also.
My Production Month is Sept 2006......meaning No Alpina Flash for me....ohhh well.

You need to find out if your 07 is Built from March 2007 and after....then you can get a Alpina Flash...or eligible for one.
if your Car Production Month is Before March 2007, you will not be getting the Alpina Flash.

How to find your Production Month:
Go to realoem.com.......click ENTER.
where it says Serial Number: enter the Last 7 of your VIN.....click search.

et wola.

DN
PS, post some Pics of your Ride.
