I have a blackvue. It's kind of old, so I'm not up to date on any newer products they make. But the recordings are crystal clear. I'd recommend you mount it on the rear window, pointed toward the front. Most dash cams are wide angle, so this can potentially see side impacts also.

This is the one I have. Absolutely no complaints other than a shorter cord than I would have liked. has worked perfectly so far sitting on the windshield in 100* weather without a hiccup.

To answer an above question, the top of the line GoPro does in fact have a "looping video" (as they call it) mode. But I don't know if I want it sitting in my dash in plain view all the time. Also, it'd be nice if I didn't have to worry about turning it on and off and setting it to the right mode every time I started the car. I know, those are firstworld problems, but basically, the GoPro isn't the perfect solution for a dashcam

Get quality one like Korean made(blackvue, inavi, etc).
I had GS1000(last year model of G1W) 1080p chinese made DVR in my car for a year. Vid quality was horrible compare to my new DVR. I bought GS1000 after reading good reviews online. I regret my purchase and it didnt record my last accident. Currently have iNavi FXD700. Its one of Korean made DVR with best vid quality. Also check out Blackvue DR550gw. Good vid quality, WIFI, 2ch, etc. |

I got one of these
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/HD-720P-Small...item1c42d45d32 Sure, Its china made, but what small electronics today arenīt? Quality is pretty good and the g-shock sensor works. It has Re-record loop and supports 16GB cards. The good thing is that its small, so you can put it up real high and you dont notice it (neither to potential theives). You can also choose to not record audio and even run a video feed down to a separate screen if you want. Also auto start-stop on ignition, records like 2 minutes after you turn the car off, then shuts down. Only a very small blue led lights up when its on. Audio beep when g-shock activates and saves that file to a non re-record map on the SD-card. The down side is only 120 degree wideangle. Cheap and does the job well enough for me.
