Average turbo failure mileage

Hey guys, new E90 owner here. I'm scoping out extended warranties to get.

78k miles on the car, 2008 335xi 6MT

I was wondering what the average mileage people experience turbo failures at. (not wastegate) I'm trying to find an appropriate mileage to cover the car for.

Also is about $1250 per 10k miles a decent price? Endurance quoted me about 5k for 42k miles, most others are around the same price.

Thanks,
Chris

So you are looking at roughly $10k for a 78k miles 335? Is that what you are saying? If so then that is a good price..

" Endurance quoted me about 5k for 42k miles"
Are you saying $5k for a 42k mile BMW 335? If that is the case the only way you will get a price that low is if the car has been written off as a total loss.

You got it backwards, I paid $15,800 for the car.

I'm talking about extended warranties.

$5k extra for 42k miles of 'fixing'

Check out route 66 warranty. There are a lot of people on here who have talked about it.

I just got it for my 08 335 with 61k.

$5K is really expensive for a warranty. I don't think I've spent $5,000 in repairs outside of general maintenance in 13 years of driving. That would get you a couple sets of OEM turbos replaced.

What kind of term did you get? If you don't mind me asking, what did you pay for it?

I got 5 years up to 100k on the car. I paid $2,000.

You would have a different plan because you have higher mileage. I think you could get the same price, but would have a little less coverage.

Google Route 66 warranty brochure and you can see all the info for the different plans.

You need to buy it through a credit union. I joined penfed and actually refinanced my car through them and added the warranty on.

I'll take a look into that. My father has been part of a credit union for about 30 years now - I'll see if his carries this (potential discount for long time customer)

If not, I'll apply for that one. I appreciate it!

Also, does the basic one cover the turbos or just the middle?

No problem. I haven't actually had to make any claim yet, since I just got it, but I've read on here that they are better than most about covering stuff. They just have a 1000 mile 30 day waiting period before it kicks in. I haven't hit the 1000 miles yet.

The 1000 mile is pretty common. Is it 30 days or 1000 miles, whichever comes first?

I can't remember exactly, but I think it is both.

Anyway, back on topic, has anyone heard stories of failing turbos at specific mileages? Just looking for something to expect.

I have 5yr/100k (on top of 38k when I got it) through Alpha Warranty for ~2k.

Covers all the important stuff, no brakes, shocks, etc though

My Route 66 warranty (4yrs/48k miles) was around $2300. My car was an 07 with 72k miles on it when I bought the policy. It blows my mind that at the end of the policy, they'll cover warranty repairs on an 11 year old German car with 100k+ miles on it for $50 a month.

Well credit unions are non-profit, unlike most other insurance companies

Route 66 is not a credit union though, it just works with credit unions, so it's probably a for profit company.

They actually have a lot of cars that they exclude (like M cars and I think all Audis). It's kind of surprising the 335i isn't on that list.

Back on the main topic. Many people have wastegate rattle as early as 50k. This isn't really a turbo failure, but something that will cause the need for turbo replacement at some point.

On the other hand there are people with well over 100k on the original turbos. There's a thread somewhere on here with a bunch of people posting their high mileage.

i had one fail at 85k and the other fail at 102k.

Edit: The first one failed under warranty, done at a dealer. This was the rear (bank 2) turbo. The second one was the front (bank 1) turbo and that was done out of warranty, not at a dealer. if i recall that ran about $4,200; the xi takes a little more labor since the front axle gets in the way.
