Same here if you take off your cowl though they'll be 100x louder as well as your turbos

Buy these http://www.burgertuning.com/cowl_filter_covers_bmw_135_335.html.

There's instructions on there on what do to. Justt got mine and love them. More sound and seems to keep the engine a little cooler.

There was a very noticeable difference when I installed my bms dci. Night and day. However I also removed my cowl and did the bms cowl filters so maybe that adds to it.

I thinks its quite a big difference. The turbo spool sound awesome I could never hear it before. Search the forum for threads about it. I bought mine used off someone here for $45 so that's another option.

Yea you can remove it and see how it sounds just put it back after you test it since you don't have the filters which covers the holes left by removing the cowl. Test it when it's not raining.

Just remove see if you like and if you do then buy the filters. Otherwise put the cowl back on. It made a huge difference for me.

This is what I've read so far...

Costs of removing engine cowl:
Possible engine smells in the cabin,
Possible failure of AC
Possible damage to engine components in rain, ice, etc
Possible engine fire (dry leaves getting near turbos)
Possible deleterious aerodynamics at speed
Windows fog up almost instantly if you turn the fan on, but not the A/C

Benefits of removing engine cowl:
Hear the engine.
Easier to do work under the hood.
Cooler under-hood temps

The guy who made them ran with the cowl completely off with no filters for 3-5 years with no problems. I don't have any engine smell and everything that is susceptible to water in your engine is watertight. I live in Florida and it's rained almost everyday for the past 2 weeks not light rain either and no problems. The engine/hood is setup to specifically prevent any type of water damage with drains, raised openings, and watertight ecu, etc. in the the end it's up to you

Looks like you did your research. I don't drive my car in the rain or snow anyway so it was a no brainer for me. I have a beater for that.

I have the BMS dci and the sound is pretty noticeable. I did realize that it was a lot quieter when my JB4 was in map 0 (stock boost).

I ran without a cowl and no filters for a long time as well, with 0 issues. Maybe a bit of smell every once in a while but i had an exhaust leak at the time so idk if it really counts. Only real thing that made sense to me is your a/c has to work harder cause it uses the hot air leaving your engine but I had 0 problems.

it seem like most people dont but i live in jersey where it does tend to rain and not sure if its even worth the risk. might just play it safe.

Keep your cowl on lol. You'll notice a sound difference when you run higher boost. I might be selling my JB4 in the Spring.

I've seen too many problems related to those cowl filters to go with anything else. One of our local test cars had a never ending fogging issue due to moisture getting into the ventilation system which will eventually lead to mold and other things nobody should be inhaling.
